How to find Shire Games

Monday 22nd February 2010

Just the eight of us in the pub this week. But at least eight is an easy number to split!

Players:

Darren, David F-F, Mel, Nick, Rachel, Rich, Sue, Suzanne

Games Played:

The first five of us decided on the stupid bunny game, as it does have the added bonus of being able to throw more people into it without them being at much of a disadvantage.  Which was useful, as we ended up with seven players ....

Hoppladi Hopplada

Sue:    347
Rachel:    129
Nick:    112
Rich:    99
Darren:    86
Mel:    69
Suzanne:    28

Oddly, it was Mel and Suzanne that joined in late, so perhaps they were at a bit of a disadvantage after all! I shocked everyone by banking on my first turn, so everyone else followed and still left me in last place before the other two appeared.  After that Sue decided to go down the "chipping away at the target" route and banked a total of five times, when the rest of us could only manage a couple of efforts apiece.

We then split into two groups for a couple of longer games ....

Macao

Mel:    68
Rachel:    63
David:    54
Rich:    50

After a little re-start (they tried to make the game easier for themselves by not having a starting card), Mel had this one pretty much under control by the looks of things, although the final scores ended up much closer than they looked like they would at the halfway point.  I don't know a whole lot about how it played out, but I did spot Mel trading in some goods at twice the price, which is always handy if you can get that card in play! It looks like Rachel put on a bit of a sprint towards the end, but couldn't catch Mel's early lead.

Le Havre

(Buildings & Ships + Cash + Bonus)

Nick:    (112 + 19 + 0)    131
Darren:    (106 + 6 + 9)    121
Sue:    (82 + 19 + 12)    113
Suzanne:    (76 + 36 + 0)    112

It has been too long since we last played this one. And this was the first time we threw in those extra dozen Special Buildings, and one of them certainly made a difference! I think I benefitted more than the rest from the Special Buildings, as the Diner appeared when I already was three-quarters of the way to having the right ingredients for it - And I ended up using it twice, trading wood, smoked fish and bread for a total of 48 cash. And right near the end, the MS Dagmar finally appeared (having been bumped down the deck several times). This ship does very little, but is worth 50 points and is free to build if you have a Luxury Liner, which I made sure I had.  The trade of 38 points for 50 gave me an extra twelve on the final turn of the game, which was enough to pass Darren's score and claim the win. Woohoo!

And finally, after a few departures due to hamster emergencies, among other things ....

Metropolys

(Highest + Trendy + Metro - Archaeological + Colours + Bonus)

Rachel:    (10 + 9 + 1 - 3 + 10 + 12)    39
Sue:    (5 + 3 + 7 - 0 + 8 + 4)    27
Darren:    (5 + 0 + 1 - 0 + 10 + 4)    20
Nick:    (5 + 0 + 0 - 2 + 6 + 0)    9

Rachel wiped the floor with us in this one.  I mean, it wasn't even close ... especially if you look at my score!  I had the tricky "Statue" bonus card, and managed to not even come close to getting one set, but I was so intent on trying to get one, I kind of lost sight of all the other goals.  Rachel was going for three buildings in each region, which she managed to do pretty convincingly, getting the bonus for three different areas, when the rest of us may not even have got 9 buildings on the board! A fun game, and another one we hadn't played for a while ... In fact, it only appeared because I saw it on the BGG game tiles last week!

And that was all we managed to get through this week.  Next week, Sue and I won't be there, but everyone else is more than welcome!
