There were ten of us that made it out to the shop this week. Here's what we got up to .....
Players:
Alex, Andy B, Darren, Gordon, Mary, Neil C, Nick, Rachel, Roj, Sue
Games Played:
I like this fun little opener, so I keep forcing it on everyone else .....
Nick:
17
Andy:
8
Gordon: 8
Mary: 6
Roj: 6
Darren: 5
Alex: 4
Rachel:
3
And so it becomes clear who the best hunter is, doesn't it? Actually ... This spectacular win was down to a gamble by me that we'd see a polar bear in the next few cards of a hunt. Someone started a very easy hunt, and I immediately doomed it. Luckily for me, everyone apart from me chose to go hunting, so when it failed (on the very last card) I collected all of the cards for myself!
We now split into two groups of five ....
Neil:
42
Nick:
40
Roj: 37
Darren: 35
Gordon:
35
Another excellent game of this one. We played once more with the basic set-up, as Gordon was new to the game, and it's one of those games that it is easy to make mistakes in (even when you've played it a few times, as we demonstrated)! This was actually a very tight game. There was a lot of dueling for actions going on (which I tried to stay away from as much as possible). I still had no points at the end of the second round, but bought a whole load in the third round to get right back into the game. A very enjoyable game ... this one is really growing on me.
Rachel:
16
Mary:
15
Andy: 14
Alex:
11
Sue: 11
This was the other game played, and I know nothing about how it went! This is one of those games that is always very tight ... and it's probably safe to assume that the majority in one colour or another gave Rachel the victory!
Neil had to leave us, so we were down to nine ....
Roj:
25 (16)
Darren:
25 (10)
Gordon: 20
Nick:
18
This was the first game for all of us. I enjoyed this one, which is a very straightforward "majorities" game, with players trying to win the various "wards" of New York and becoming Mayor. Of course, the downside to being Mayor is that you have to appoint the rest of the players to various offices in your cabinet, giving them extra powers for the next four rounds. A very clever little game that both Darren and I thought we had blown in the first four rounds, and yet Darren ended up in a tiebreak for the win! (Admittedly, had Roj thought about which chip to bid with in the final round, he'd have won by a couple of points, but still ....)
(Buildings or People)
Rachel:
(28 or 33) 28
Andy:
(29 or 27) 27
Mary: (25 or 27) 25
Alex: (32 or 24) 24
Sue:
(18 or 24) 18
This looks like it was a pretty tight game. Well .... between four of them anyway. I think Sue was teaching the game, so obviously concentrating on making sure everyone else did well, rather than playing for herself. Yes ... that must be it.
And finally ......
Darren:
6
Mary: 6
Andy:
4
Rachel: 4
Nick: 3
Sue: 3
Alex:
1
I don't think anyone managed to get three wins in the three rounds. The Saboteurs won the first and last, with the honest dwarves making a rather quick connection in the middle round, when only Sue and I were the bad guys. The final round was interesting, as the three saboteurs managed to build more cards on the wrong side of the ladder than the good guys built in the direction of the treasure!
And that was all we had time for this week. thanks to those that came along, and nice to finally meet Mary!
