How to find Shire Games

Monday 18th January 2010

There were eight of us in the pub this week .....

Players:

Darren, David F-F, Gordon, Nick, Rachel, Rich, Sue, Suzanne

Games Played:

Keltis - Der Weg der Steine

Four of us were in on time nice and early ....

(Path + Stones + Bonus)

Darren:    (18 + 3 + 3)    24
Sue:    (11 + 6 + 7)    24
Nick:    (9 + 3 + 4)    16
Rachel:    (8 - 4 + 5)    9

That's two weeks running that we've opened with a tied game!  (I know that makes it look like I can actually remember things, but in truth I'm just typing over last week's scores).  Rachel did pretty terribly at this, and I was sitting to her left which would make you think that I would benefit. Nope ... I did almost as badly!

And then we were eight ... But not entirely sure if that was it, so we played another shortie ....

Nanuk

David:    15
Rich:    13
Nick:    11
Darren:    9
Sue:    8
Gordon:    4
Suzanne:    2
Rachel:    1

Woohoo!  I scored some points ... Which was a big improvement over Thursday when a few of us played this for the first time. About halfway through, Rich was miles in front, as I pointed out to everyone, and I have a feeling he didn't earn a single point after that, which was a perfectly timed kiss of death! I think I could have done a lot better, but did get carried away with the bidding once, going for twelve fish, or something equally as stupid, when a few people were giving me encouraging bids; and then they all contributed a single card each! Rachel had another bad game. She was already blaming the beer at this point.

We split into two groups ......

Vasco da Gama

Gordon:    84
Darren:    78
Rachel:    68
Sue:    62

Don't know a whole lot about this one, sadly, although it was taking place right behind me. Whenever I turned around I was told to stop being so nosey and concentrate on what I was playing, so that's why they don't get much of a write-up.  I did overhear Rachel grumbling about getting the timings of the actions wrong at one point (probably the beer again), but at least Sue spared her blushes a little this time.

World Without End

Nick:    54.5
David:    44
Rich:    41
Suzanne:    36.5

I was the only one who had played this before, so obviously only told them enough to keep me in front! The events weren't too punishing in this game (except they kept closing the markets), so we were pretty good at having the right stuff at the end of each chapter. Apart from the time when the markets were closed and David had no cash ... That did cost him four points!  The odd thing about this game is not a single building project appeared on the board (apart from the Bridge and Tower of course) until round five of Chapter four when the tiny one appeared, but by that time all of us (apart from Rich) had ditched our building cards! I benefitted from building very early a couple of times, which turned out to be the thing to do with building spaces limited.

Keltis - Der Weg der Steine

Another outing for this quickie ....

(Path + Stones + Bonus)

Gordon:    (9 + 2 + 10)    21
Rachel:    (11 - 3 + 3)    11
Sue:    (7 + 3 + 1)    11
Darren:    (3 + 2 + 5)    10

I have no idea what Rachel has got against those little green stones, but she really doesn't like collecting them! A comfortable win for Gordon in this one!

We were down to seven, so quickly reshuffled the groups to try a couple of the little expansions from the Alea Treasure Chest .....

In the Year of the Dragon

Darren:    115
Sue:    106
David:    95

David's record at keeping his people alive in this game is not great. It turns out that they didn't use the Great Wall expansion, but did add the "Super Event" halfway through the game, which turned out to be a good one, so they all got an extra young worker (I think).  A pretty close game by all accounts, with Sue spending the whole game ahead on the people track, but not able to catch Darren by the end.

Notre Dame

Rachel:    55
Rich:    43
Nick:    40
Gordon:    38

We did add the little expansion to this one, although it's only nine characters, and we saw four or five of them I think. We did see the guy who will double your points after three turns, which was quite a surprise. I think the only person who didn't use him was Rachel, as she only had four points at the time (and look how it finished!). Everyone decided I was doing very well (even though I know I wasn't) and spent the whole game moaning about how much I was winning by! In the end, a very good (and fairly comfortable) win for Rachel!

And that was that for another week.  Thanks to those who came along ... See you all next time.
