How to find Shire Games

Thursday 14th January 2010

After a frantic day's tidying up, the first Thursday games night was on, and seven of us made it in ....

Players:

Darren, Dave F, Nick, Rachel, Richard, Roj, Sue

Games Played:

Nanuk

All seven of us appeared at roughly the same time (sort of), so we thought we'd give this one a try .....

Darren:    15
Roj:    13
Sue:    13
Rachel:    11
Richard:    7
Dave F:    2
Nick:    0

Now obviously this is a very silly game, as you can see by the scores. I was trying, honest, but I also had to try and hold up my record with push-your-luck games. Actually, it was quite fun. The first hunt was for a massive 10 fish in 8 days, which failed (but only just), so after that the bids weren't quite so outrageous. All the hunts I went on missed out by a single animal (twice on the turn of the last card), and the ones I thought were doomed turned out to be fine. So maybe I'm just not a very good hunter. And Darren is obviously very, very lucky.

Sue wandered off to do some work, so the rest of us split into two groups of three.  Which means that there are two games I know a bit about, and two that I haven't a clue about.  As per usual ....

Assyria

Roj:    108
Darren:    106
Nick:    102

New to both Darren and Roj.  This was an excellent game, as always, and very close all the way round. Hardly any wells were built in the first Reign (which may have been my fault stressing how useful the Ziggurats were), but we starting building loads in the last two reigns. Darren led for most of the game, but Roj and I were slowly catching up as it went on and our Ziggurats were getting larger and larger.  It finally came down to the fact that Roj had his plough at the end of the game, along with a couple of camels to putt it, giving him the two bonus points which moved him past Darren's score.

World Without End

Dave:    55.5
Rachel:    47
Richard:    41

Rachel taught this one to the other two who hadn't played before. Apart from that, I know nothing about it ... But the events were obviously much, much friendlier than those in our game when we played it later the same evening!

Vasco da Gama

Rachel:    78
Richard:    76
Dave:    66

The upstairs lot finished first and brought us their copy of World Without End so we could have a go. And they went off exploring the New World. This one looks like it was pretty close, with Rachel's experience showing in the end.

World Without End

Darren:    47
Roj:    38
Nick:    30

Hey! I just noticed I came last in every game I played tonight. I blame it on the fact that there's no beer on Thursdays.

Anyway ... Again, this was new to Darren and Roj.  We got a terrible run of events in this one, and all the bad long-lasting ones managed to appear in the very first turn, making their effects last for six turns! We all were short of something in the first chapter, but after that we got a little better at providing what we needed.  Darren and Roj did pretty well curing the sick, whereas I built a "medicine" house and then hardly ever used it, as I needed the money and piety more when it was rent time. A fun game, and a good win for Darren.

And that was all we managed this week.  Thanks to those that came out ... I'll try and keep the place tidy from now on.
