Monday 11th January 2010
Twelve of us in this week, which was a bit of an improvement!
Players:
Darren, David F-F, Johnny, Liz, Mark P, Mel, Nick, Rachel, Rachel 2, Sue, Suzanne, Tim
"Rachel
2" was back, which is good news, but it turns out that she has the same
initial as Rachel 1!
So ... Unless I can find out that she spells Rachel differently (which she might
... you never know), they are just going to have to be Rachel and Rachel 2 for
the foreseeable future.
Games Played:
Five of us were in nice and early, and fancied some cake ...
(Cake + Cream)
Darren:
(9 + 16) 25
Rachel: (12 + 13) 25
Sue:
(10 + 13) 23
Suzanne: (11 + 12) 23
Nick:
(20 + 2) 22
This is a fun little game. Very easy to explain and play, but quite tricky to do the dividing when your turn comes round! I concentrated a little too much on the majorities for the cakes, while Darren did the opposite and ate most of his slices! In the end, a very tight score!
And then (almost) everyone was here, and we split into three groups ....
(Points
+ Symbols + Farmers + Tools + Builders + Shamen)
Rachel
2: (110 + 0 + 10 + 42 + 0 + 32) 194
Johnny:
(118 + 9 + 18 + 0 + 35 + 0) 180
Tim:
(109 + 36 + 0 + 4 + 21 + 0) 170
I know nothing about this one (which could apply to all games this evening, unfortunately). Tim was the only one who'd played this before, and obviously did an excellent job of teaching the game, as Rachel and Johnny both out-scored him!
Sue:
40.5
Mel:
37.5
Mark: 35.5
Rachel:
29
Sue taught this one, and obviously didn't do as good a job as Tim above, as she then went on to beat them all! having said that, Sue had only played the game a couple of times, and both of those were 2-player games with me, and I have a sneaky feeling that the four-player game is much tougher. This really is an excellent game ... Very different from its predecessor and crammed full of tricky decisions.
Darren:
164
David:
113
Suzanne: 109
Nick:
106
Now, this one seems to take a little longer than it says on the box! Having said that, I hadn't played the game before, and so we were all learning it from the rules, and the set-up/rules reading took quite some time. The game was very enjoyable, although I was quite conscious of the time, and didn't personally spend much time looking what tiles were available and what I should be doing! I'm not sure it's ideally suited to being a pub game, as some of the tiles require decent lighting to see all the symbols on them from the other side of the table. Is that enough excuses for why I came last ?? Oh ... Everyone picked on me. A lot. Darren thinks we may have forgotten to re-jig the turn order in the final round, but I don't think it would have made much difference - And it definitely wouldn't have changed who won!
The other tables both had time for another game, and both almost went for the same one ....
Tim:
44
Liz:
25
Rachel 2: 25
Johnny:
13
Tim decided to wreak his revenge for the Stone Age game by only teaching people enough of this game so that he could beat them all soundly!
Rachel:
63
Mel:
49
Mark: 47
Sue:
37
Another reversal from the earlier game, as Sue went from first to last. Rachel and Sue had played this before last week, so this one was just new to Mark and Mel. And Mark has never been any good at Ra (that's why he doesn't like it .. don't let him tell you different).
And that was all we had time for this week. Thanks to all those who came along - I promise next week if we play something new, I'll have a good read of the rules first.
