How to find Shire Games

Monday 8th February 2010

Nine of us in the pub this week.

Players:

Alex, Cathy, Darren, David F-F, Nick, Paul, Rachel, Sue, Suzanne

Games Played:

There was a bit of a lack of quick openers (I was tired when I packed the bag) so we split into two groups, with one group playing shorter games should anyone else appear ....

Can't Stop!

Cathy:    3
Nick:    1
Sue:    1
Rachel:    0

This was new to Cathy, whereas the rest of us had played before, so you'd think we'd know better. In fact, I think we were all going for glory, whereas Cathy was being sensible and banking at the right times.  When Cathy got her second point, I think she was leading in four other tracks, so we all had to combine our efforts and try and beat her, but we failed.

Wasabi!

(Points + Wasabi)

Sue:    (26 + 3)    29
Cathy:    (21 + 2)    23
Nick:    (15 + 1)    16
Rachel:    (11 + 3)    14

We thought we'd play another game with an exclamation mark and so broke out the raw fish. Rachel and I were hit by a wicker basket full of food at every turn (hampered ... that's the word), meanwhile Sue and Cathy were completing recipes like they were professional chefs. Although I'm not sure a sushi maker is a chef technically ... If they don't actually ever cook anything. Anyway ... Sue came out on top, and ended the game with a Wasabi card.

All the time we were doing that .... This was happening:

Thunderstone

David:    23
Suzanne:    22
Alex:    12
Paul:    12
Darren:    9

This took them a little time, although to be fair none of them had played before. Interestingly, David and Suzanne missed half of the rules explanation, and then comfortably outscored the rest of them. I'm not sure if that says something about how well they pick games up, or whether it says more about Darren/Rachel's rules explanation!

Würfel Bingo

Nick:    136
Rachel    135
Cathy:    123
Sue:    88

We now played this game. At time of writing, I can't for the life of me remember what it was, so it's just "DB" until I remember.  Of course, by the time anyone reads this, I'll have probably corrected the title and this will all make no sense.  Rachel and I look like we did quite well at this one, so there's a fair chance that it'll turn out to be a game where the lowest scores wins and we actually did quite poorly. Duelling Banjos ?? Hmm ... I'll get on with the report, and maybe it'll come back to me.  I have a nagging feeling it was a dice game.  Dice Bingo!  Of course .... no wonder I couldn't remember - I didn't write down its proper name.  Although, I have a horrible feeling I said to myself "I'm never going to remember what that was" when I wrote it down!

We were now all done at the same time, and mixed the groups round a little to play some longer games ....

Small World

Suzanne:    84
Cathy:    81
Sue:    75
Alex:    71
Nick:    69

This was the first time that I'd played with the extra races, and it makes the game quite interesting for a couple of reasons: One is because of the new powers of course, but the other is because you are no longer guaranteed to see all of the races or powers in the game, which is very refreshing. Cathy and Alex had not played the game before, but the rest of us were old hands. A good win for Suzanne, who has some sort of stealth knack of staying undetected ... although to be fair, a few of us had mentioned that we thought she was doing quite well .. we just couldn't do anything about it!

Homesteaders

(Points + Buildings + Bonus + Goods - Unpaid Debts)

Darren:    (31 + 18 + 7 + 2 - 1)    57
David:    (26 + 18 + 6 + 6 - 0)    56
Rachel:    (25 + 13 + 4 + 4 - 3)    43
Paul:    (17 + 18 + 7 + 2 - 3)    41

And the other lot ended with this one, which I am still keen to play, but somehow keep avoiding. A good win for Darren in this one. And a good second for David, who was placed last on the night thanks to a couple of slight mathematical errors ... But it turns out he did better than everyone thought.

And that was it once again.  These nights seem to fly by at the moment.  Thanks all for coming out - See you next time.
