How to find Shire Games

Thursday 4th February 2010

Just seven of us in the shop this week.

Players:

Darren, Dave F, Mike, Nick, Rachel, Roj, Sue

Games Played:

Mow

While waiting for everyone to appear, five of us went to the cow field ....

Nick:    60
Mike:    80
Dave:    91
Darren:    101
Rachel:    107

This lasted for six rounds, which I think is one longer than usual ... as everyone (apart from me) was sharing the points round nicely between them in the first five rounds. In the last round, I got caught for about half the flies in the deck, but still managed to stay in front thanks to a healthy lead up to that point, which - to be fair - was created thanks to some very handy last-minute draws off the deck!

We were up to seven, so we split up ....

World Without End

Mike:    50.5
Dave:    45.5
Rachel:    35
Sue:    35

This was going on upstairs while I was down playing the other game, and so I haven't the faintest idea what happened!  Interestingly, Sue and Rachel had played the game many times between them, and Dave and Mike were both new to it. So obviously the girls taught it very well. Can't think of any other reason why they would both post terrible scores ....

Meanwhile downstairs, we finally got to play  .....

Indonesia

Nick:    $1,783
Roj:    $1,580
Darren:    $1,487

This was very enjoyable, and quite long!  And it was new to all of us, so we're really not sure why I did well, or why anybody did anything really! We have a feeling that we didn't have enough shipping companies in the game (letting a couple go in the first era), and eventually I completely abandoned shipping, paying small fortunes (at the time) for some merged production companies.  And by the end of the game, despite paying half my profits to Roj and Darren to borrow their ships, I think it's this income that edged me a little in front.  An excellent game, and one we need to play again soon ....

The upstairs group went for a brand new one ...

Homesteaders

(Points + Buildings + Bonus + Goods - Unpaid Debts)

Rachel:    (37 + 16 + 5 + 2 - 0)    60
Dave:    (21 + 31 + 1 + 2 - 0)    55
Sue:    (34 + 15 + 5 + 0 - 0)    54
Mike:    (30 + 9 + 5 + 0 - 0)    44

This was brand new to all four of them, and they all seemed to really enjoy it. Again, I haven't the foggiest idea what went on, or what those scores mean, but Sue did mention that Rachel had got herself loads of the trade chits, which allow you to go the market and buy and sell for cash, gold and points .... So let's assume she did a lot of trading! I'm hoping to play this one on Monday, and then I'll know what I'm talking about!

And finally ....

Gambit 7

Nick:    168
Dave:    130
Rachel:    42
Darren:    32
Sue:    18
Roj:    0

This was a lot of fun, as always.  After six questions, the scores were very tight, as we'd all been scoring 6 here and there. In fact, even the bloke that wasn't playing had got 18 points (don't ask). But on the last question, three of us gambled all of our points: Dave and I on the correct answer (just) and Roj on the wrong one (hence the "0").  The others were all chicken and chose to play for "not last"  :-)

And that was all we had time for this week.  Thanks to those who came along ....
