How to find Shire Games

Monday 1st February 2010

There were eleven of us in this week. Immediately breaking the "eleventh person brings a friend" rule that was introduced last Thursday. Sheesh.

Players:

Darren, David F-F, Haydn, Mark P, Mel, Nick, Rachel, Rachel 2, Rich, Sue, Suzanne

Games Played:

No time for an opener as such this week, as we all kind of appeared about the same time ....

Thunderstone

Mel:    19
Rachel:    17
Haydn:    13
Sue:    13
Rich:    8

Interesting that the two highest scores come from the two people who had played before. My guess is that your first play definitely gives you some hints as to which cards are better than others to buy.  Enjoyed by all, as far as I know, and a good win for Mel.

Steam

Darren:    32
Mark P:    26    (2)
Suzanne:    26    (1)    (2)
Nick:    26    (1)    (7)
Rachel 2:    26    (0)
David:    25

This was played on the England map, and goods were at a bit of a shortage by the end of it!  having said that ... There would have been way too many if we'd filled the board as per the old rules. A very tight game, with no one obviously out in front until the final turn, when it looked like Darren was going to pull away. Only two of us started west of the Pennines, while three others were initially fighting for space in the Northwest. Rachel was the odd one out, as she began at the bottom of the map, taking the short hop across the hills very early on. In fact, Rachel appeared to slip back in the first couple of turns as she learned the game, but then pulled back very nicely in the second half to get up to the second best score.  The tiebreakers were income level initially (which gave Mark second spot), then character choice after that, which put Suzanne ahead of me, as I'd gone for a new city, hoping to get both cubes (which was never going to happen!).

Priests of Ra

Rachel:    65
Haydn:    58
Sue:    47
Mel:    45
Rich:    29

I know very little about this one, as we were deep into our game of Steam at this point.  Haydn had never actually played Ra before, which was a bit of a shock to all of us, but maybe that's a help when learning this one, as you've not got to forget anything either! A good win for Rach in this one, with Haydn posting a pretty good beginner's score.

Rich had to disappear, but the other four still had time for another quickie .....

Keltis - Der Weg der Steine

(Paths + Stones + Bonus)

Rachel:    (12 + 3 + 6)    21
Haydn:    (19 - 3 + 2)    18
Mel:    (1 + 3 + 6)    10
Sue:    (2 + 2 + 3)    7

Wow ... There's a couple of pretty awful scores in here.  I'm not quite sure how you can only score one or two for your paths, but this one definitely looks like it was a two-horse race.  Another win for Rachel as they waited for us to finish playing with trains ....

And, finally ...

Pickomino

David:    7
Rachel:    6
Darren:    2
Haydn:    2
Sue:    1
Nick:    0

Would you believe that Haydn hadn't played this one either ?  You'd think he'd never come to a games night before!  After quickly going over the rules, Sue started this one by rolling 36 and taking the biggest tile there is (although I'm sure it was going to be a demo roll until it turned out so well). However ... as the game went on, the people who'd started strongly (Sue and I, really) got hammered and had all of our worms removed with surgical precision. Eww. After that, it became a bit of a two-way fight between Rachel and David - I think David had less tiles, but stronger ones.

And that was all we had time for this week.  Thanks to all those who came along.
