How to find Shire Games

Monday 23rd November 2009

There were eleven of us in the pub this week. At some point in the evening, anyway .....

Players:

Alex, Darren, Gordon, Haydn, Mark P, Mel, Neil C, Nick, Rachel, Sue, Suzanne

Games Played:

The first six of us got the bunnies out again. I must think of something different to bring ....

Hoppladi Hopplada!

Nick:    366
Gordon:    341
Sue:    236
Suzanne:    105
Darren:    56
Alex:    54

Sue was the one that started the "winning round". Having been vying for the lead with Gordon, Sue scored about 60 points and banked, Gordon added enough to get him over the 333 and also banked, passing me two dice. I managed to get a bunch more points, banked that and handed two dice to Darren. He got a couple more rabbits, but it wasn't quite enough to get the victory, so rather than play for position, he went for it and bust!  That may well be the first win for me of this one, so that'll be the last time I bring that one!

We now split into two groups, mindful of Neil arriving in an hour's time ....

Dominion - Seaside

Game 1

Rachel:    45
Sue:    42
Mel:    41
Alex:    31

Game 2

Sue:    45
Alex:    35
Mel:    34
Rachel:    27

These were just the first two of many games of Dominion tonight. I know nothing about any of them!

The BoardGameGeek Game

Suzanne:    146
Gordon:    142
Darren:    142
Mark:    134
Haydn:    117
Nick:    115

This is a much better game than it has any right to be. I think everyone was expecting some sort of "gimmick" of a game, thanks to the tie-in,  but it actually plays very well.  I was scuppered by waiting for Darren to put his "4" games into the shops, only to find out that he'd played them all earlier, before I was even collecting "4"s. Darren meanwhile was slightly scuppered by the fact that I'd missed out the rule that you all had to play all of your tiles (sorry!), as we was trying to be mean and hold a number back. I think all of the top four had two complete sets, where Haydn and I didn't, but sadly I didn't pick up many "5" and "6" tiles, leaving me trailing. Suzanne had a couple of sets and a couple of 6s to go with them, giving her a good win.

We then mixed up a little, and lost one as well  .....

Dominion - Seaside

Suzanne:    3
Mel:    1
Rachel:    0
Sue:    0
Alex:    -1

Now that is impressive scoring. I think this game may have had the "Sea Hag" in it., judging by some comments at the end of the night.  Either way ... pretty scary scoring, considering that everyone starts with three points!

Carson City

Haydn:    46
Darren:    42
Nick:    35
Neil:    32
Mark:    28

This one took the five of us the rest of the evening, but it was definitely enjoyed by all. Sadly, early on we overlooked a building rule when a hotel got placed without a road from the town center, and all we could do was punish the transgressor by a cowboy, as we couldn't see a way to step backwards.  After that, it became pretty clear how important roads are in a 5-player game! Neil was the bully of the evening, often building up massive firepower (to grab a couple of extra actions and also to use for income and scoring). A tough game with five, without any of the variants, and the most aggressive one I've seen, as we kept going into the next round with the cowboys we had left over! A good win for Haydn, who did his best to not annoy anyone else!

Dominion & Dominion - Seaside

Game 1

Sue:    34
Suzanne:    33
Alex:    28
Mel:    26
Rachel:    25

Game 2

Sue:    17
Mel:    13
Alex:    3
Rachel:    1

Even more Dominion to end the evening for the other group!

And that was all we had time for this week, as the grumpy barman was on and he was trying to kick us out. Luckily, I think that was his last week!
