How to find Shire Games

Thursday 30th July 2009

A very quiet week this week, thanks to all the holidays.  In fact, there were just five of us in ....

Players:

Darren, Nick, Rachel, Rich, Sue

Games Played:

A quick starter to see if anyone else was coming along ....

Excape

Darren:    21
Rachel:    15
Sue:    14
Nick:    13
Rich:    13

This was an unusual game in that no one really got left behind at the start! Sue was high up at one point, only a step or two away from the win, and then suddenly started to go backwards at an alarming rate! Rachel started fast, managed to get all the way back to the start, and then shot off again and looked like she might also win it. And even Rich and I spent some time fighting for last before we decided to join in. Meanwhile, Darren slowly plodded around the board, taking singles here and there, as well as rolling far more X-X rolls than the law of averages allows!

Small World

Rachel:    92
Rich:    86
Sue:    84
Darren:    77
Nick:    73

A popular choice, as we always enjoy this one. It was Rich's first game, but we made sure that the newbie didn't win in this particular case! Sue was first up and set off strongly with Pillaging Trolls, and Rachel followed with Commando Ratmen.  Darren, Rich and I struggled to get going - I was going with Skeletons, which have always looked useful in someone else's hands, but not mine! I don't think I had a single round with more than ten points before the final turn, despite declining ten of them, only to see most of them perish before I got in again with my stout Humans. Grrr. A good win for Rachel, who we really must stop believing when she claims not to be winning.

Power Grid - Korea

Sue:    15 cities    (€86)
Rachel:    15 cities    (€76)
Darren:    12
Nick:    11
Rich:    10

We finally managed to get this new map on the table, despite Rachel's reservations. A tricky map with the resource markets split, although - apart from being forced to pay the extra one or two - no one really got screwed by the lack of resources, although in the final round there was only just enough to go round! The power plants came out in a bizarre order, as we saw a lot of high ones early on, and then - when we actually needed the big ones, all we got were the smaller plants which were no use. During this time, Rachel had picked up big early plants, and was the only one able to power 15 cities, so we all had to spend our cash on making sure she didn't buy into 15 cities! At that point, we all sat on 14 cities until Darren accidentally triggered Step 3, and the final cities were built. At which point, Sue had the cash, thanks to Rachel being forced to spend a fortune in step 2, just to get to 14 cities.

And finally .....

Keltis - Der Weg der Steine

(Paths + Stones + Bonus)

Sue:    (13 + 3 + 4)    20
Nick:    (15 - 4 + 8)    19
Rachel:    (10 + 2 + 7)    19
Darren:    (6 + 10 + 1)    17

This was a close result! I was doing very well for paths, but couldn't find a single wishing stone anywhere at all. Darren was doing exactly the opposite of me, not having any luck with his paths but almost every stone he took had a wishing stone on it! Sue is generally far too lucky at this game ... we may have to ban her from playing it.

And that was it for this Thursday. See you all next week.
