How to find Shire Games

Monday 27th July 2009

Eight of us made it down to the pub this week ....

Players:

David F-F, Mark P, Michael, Nick, Sue, Suzanne, Tim, Tracey

Games Played:

Four of us were in before the others, and we had finally managed to replace the copy of this excellent little game that someone (mentioning no names) had given away:

Keltis - Der Weg der Steine

(Paths + Stones + Bonus)

Sue:    (14 + 2 + 9)    25
Nick:    (11 + 6 + 6)    23
Suzanne:    (6 + 2 + 4)    12
Michael:    (7 + 2 + 1)    10

Always a fun and quick game, this one came down to a battle between those that had played the game before! I thought I had a good chance, as the others all started going for the same couple of colours, but sadly that wasn't enough to beat Sue, who always seems to do well at this one. Then again, I never beat her at lost Cities either. You'd think I'd learn.

Then we were up to five ....

Heckmeck - Das Kultspiel

Michael:    12
Sue:    6
Nick:    4
Suzanne:    2
Tim:    0

This is the new, teeny tiny version of Pickomino, and it really is quite small. Perfect for playing on the table in a plane or maybe in a doll's house, but possibly not on a huge table in the pub, where it gets a little lost! Michael got revenge for the previous game by stealing everyone's worms on a regular basis. He even started all friendly and passed up the opportunity of stealing in the first couple of rounds, then all of a sudden he turned nasty and no one could stop him!

And now we were eight  ....

Tulipmania 1637

David:    Fl 17,625
Sue:    Fl 14,600
Nick:    Fl 13,725
Mark:    Fl 13,350

I really enjoyed this one, and I think the others did as well. The funny thing was, although the rules were fairly straightforward and everyone knew what to do, no one really knew what to do to win. I concentrated on one colour, but I think that was exactly the opposite of what needs to be done. The rule about everyone discarding a card if you speculate a tulip to crashing point is crucial, but we only realised this once someone did it! However ... I think this will all become clear with another couple of plays.

Meanwhile on the other table ....

Pillars of the Earth

Suzanne:    46
Michael:    43
Tim:    43
Tracey:    41

I think this was a first game for Tracey, but everyone else had played before. In which case, that was a pretty good performance, as those scores are very close. Enjoyed by all, as far as I could tell!

Mark chose a game for our table, and he'd just got his hands on a copy of ...

Automobile

Mark P:    $4,670
Nick:    $4,610
David:    $3,900
Sue:    $3,570

This is the closest finish we've seen in all our games so far, I think. Mark and I both over-produced in the final round, although I was worst hit, I think. I might have been able to make up that $60 if I'd decided to reduce my prices in the final sale, but I was sat with a pair of 5s - Little did I know that everyone else had 2s and 3s!!  An excellent game - gets better every time.

Carcassonne

Tracey:    228
Tim:    160

And this was the last game on the other table - I helped tot up the score at the end with the farms, and it looked like one little farm at the end had given Tracey a narrow victory - I didn't realise that she was a lap ahead on the score track!

And that was closing time for another week. Thanks to those who came along, and see you all next week.
