How to find Shire Games

Thursday 20th August 2009

Just the six of us in the shop this week ....

Players:

Darren, Mike, Nick, Rachel, Roj, Susan

Games Played:

The first five of us eventually decided to do something while we were waiting ....

Mow

Mike:    52
Darren:    57
Susan:    64
Nick:    67
Rachel:    131

Always a fun little game. Rachel basically dropped out of the reckoning in the first and second rounds. I joined her in the third round, and then Susan picked up here big score in the fourth, leaving Mike and Darren to battle it out in the last.  And Mike just did enough to stay in front.

And then Roj appeared .....

Heckmeck - Das Kultspiel

Nick:    8
Roj:    6
Mike:    3
Rachel:    3
Susan:    1
Darren:    0

Woohoo! I rarely win the worm game. Perhaps it was the fact that we were playing this tiny version on a massive table, so that no one could really see how many worms were in my little stack. Successful luck-pushing went on here, so that's my quota for another couple of months.

We decided to stay in one group all evening .....

Jet Set

Darren:    25
Rachel:    24    (27)
Nick:    24    (10)
Mike:    16
Susan:    15
Roj:    14

This is a clever little game, and one that no one apart from me had played before. At first, money is horribly tight and the game looks like it'll go on for ever, then suddenly, things are moving and you need to prepare for the end of the game! I was actually prepared for my "final" flight a little early, as it didn't look like the game was close to ending, then Darren went and did something sneaky just after I used one of my planes for something else, catching me on the hop and costing me a couple of turns! No one else apart from Darren and I managed their final flights, but Rachel had made so many mid-range trips during the game that she very nearly overtook the pair of us, despite doing nothing but taking cash for the last couple of turns. Good fun.

Long Shot

Mike:    $165
Nick:    $150
Roj:    $120
Susan:    $65
Darren:    $45
Rachel:    $20

This was a load of fun again, involving yet more miraculous catching up by the back horses. Mike owner the winner, which was determine to cross the line first, even re-rolling its number! After that, there was a massive pause until the second (Roj's) and third (mine) horses came past, at which point practically every other horse could have grabbed third place. I had a bet on Roj's second placed horse, so I managed to pass him in the final count. Oddly, the other horse I owned was so far ahead at the half-way point that all of its betting tokens had gone and all of us had money on it. It came in 9th!
Ooooh .... Almost forgot to mention .... Rachel finished with less money than she started with!

Dominion / Dominion Intrigue

Rachel:    30
Darren:    26
Roj:    23
Nick:    16
Susan:    10

This looked like it was a nice, friendly set of cards, with only Militia and the Bureaucrat as attacks, and a Secret Chamber to help out. But somehow, it was tougher than it first looks. The game at one point looked like it was going to end really fast, as there weren't many cheap cards and they looked like running out. So Roj and I (mainly I, actually) panicked a little and started to hoover up too many cheap greens, trying to grab points before the early end. This meant that the decks were way too green-heavy, and we could never get enough coins!  I think there was a total of one Province bought, and that was by Rachel ... and that was what swung the game her way, after it eventually ended due to a lack of Estates and Duchies!

And then we were four, for a quick closer .....

Keltis - Der Weg der Steine

(Paths + Stones + Bonus)

Darren:    (11 + 10 + 4)    25
Rachel:    (16 - 3 + 3)    16
Nick:    (3 + 3 + 7)    13
Susan:    (3 - 4 + 6)    5

This is always a good one, although for some odd reason, almost every single stone three of us flipped over were only good for one person: Darren. He actually started quite slowly, but soon was well in command. I'm not sure he actually ever had to flip a tile for himself, as we kept doing it for him!

And that was that.

We're away on holiday next week, and the Monday after that is a Bank Holiday, so the next time we're all together will be at the shop on Thursday 3rd September.
