Monday 20th July 2009
There were just seven of us in the pub this week.
Players:
David F-F, Gordon, Mark H, Michael, Nick, Sue, Suzanne
Games Played:
Five of us were in nice and early, although not on our usual table! I'm not sure how we managed ....
Sue:
(6 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 7) 13
Gordon: (5 + 0 + 2 + 7 +
4) 18
Michael: (8 + 4 + 0 + 2 + 7) 21
Suzanne: (5 + 4 + 7 + 10 + 8) 34
Nick: (6 + 11 + 16 + 9 +
6) 48
This was a disaster. Gordon kept leaving me in a terrible position, which meant I kept picking up cards. And everyone was really mean, as they would thrown all the poison in the cauldrons that I was being forced to take. Grrr. As a result of this, Sue - who rather smartly chose to sit on my left - kept getting an empty cauldron to play in. It's just generally not fair.
Then David arrived, which gave us a chance to try this new one ....
Suzanne:
$240
David:
$170
Nick: $90
Sue: $80
Gordon: $55
Michael:
$50
This was a lot of fun. A quick and simple race/betting game, with a great big dollop of luck which keeps everyone interested. It was fun to see how the race changed as some of the early starters just ground to a halt, and one of the last horses to get going ran round and came in third. Suzanne kept getting heaps of money and bets from her cards, where the rest of us never seemed to get a good card to match the horses we owned. Enjoyed by all.
Mark arrived, and we split into two groups ...
Sue:
31
Mark:
27
Gordon: 26
Suzanne:
23
Sadly, I wasn't paying too much attention to this one, as I was busy trying to think on the other table. I believe that Sue was the only one who managed to get her 8-point super duper recipe completed (although not "with style", which is how it should be done).
Nick:
91
Michael:
85
David:
79
Another excellent game of Caylus, although I suppose I am a bit biased - This has long been my favourite game. And I won! Actually, things were pretty tight throughout the game, and no one was sure who was winning. I was pretty sure it was David, as he built the Cathedral for 25 points in the penultimate turn, but both Michael and I had a load of resources left and we managed to get so many batches into the castle that we could build prestige buildings at the very end of the game. I used cash to buy 5 points a couple of times, and it looks like that was what clinched it for me.
And finally, on the other table ....
Sue:
42
Mark:
17
Suzanne:
-9
Again, I know little about this one. But it looks like Sue's experience at loading trucks paid off a little here.
And that was all we had time for. In fact, more than we had time for, as it was almost midnight when we left!
