How to find Shire Games

Thursday 16th July 2009

Eleven of us, all told, in the shop this week ....

Players:

Darren, Dave F, David C, Mark P, Mike, Neil C, Neil H, Nick, Rachel, Roj, Sue

Games Played:

Four of us were in nice and early ....

Sixis

Sue:    170
Nick:    160
Mark P:    140
Mike:    50

This is a fun little game, and would probably work much better over several rounds. As others had turned up, we decided to just play the one ....

We were now up to nine, and decided to play a couple of quickies ....

Money

Rachel:    550
Neil C:    520
Roj:    510
Darren:    310
Nick:    260

I always enjoy this quick filler, although it went horribly for me here, as I never seemed to get anything remotely useful, and spent the whole game just looking for something to collect. The top three all managed to get a set of 9, which was pretty impressive!

Keltis - Der Weg der Steine

(Paths + Stones + Bonus)

Game 1

Dave F:    (10 + 2 + 8)    20
Mike:    (11 + 3 + 4)    18
Sue:    (7 + 2 + 1)    10
David C:    (-2 + 3 + 6)    7

Game 2

David C:    (13 + 2 + 1)    16
Mike:    (6 + 3 + 7)    16
Sue:    (6 + 3 + 7)    16
Dave F:    (-1 + 2 + 5)    6

That second game looks like a close one! David has been promoted to "shared win" thanks to the independent adjudicator's checking of Sue's arithmetic on the night.

Big Points

Darren:    19
N
eil C:    18
Rachel:    18
Roj:    18
Nick:    17

Another game that works well when playing multiple rounds, but we only chose to play one. Of course, over multiple rounds, I'd have hauled back that massive deficit and claimed a magnificent victory. As it stands, a very tight game that Darren just edged.

Now it was time for the longer stuff ....

Small World

Neil H:    79
Rachel:    77
Dave F:    74
Sue:    74
Neil C:    73

Another very close-looking game of Small World, and another win for the one person in the group that hadn't played the game at all! I'm sure this is all about the experienced players pointing the finger at each other, but surprisingly Neil H claimed it was down to skillful play and clever strategy.

Automobile

Mike:    $4,890
David C:    $4,020
Nick:    $3,590
Roj:    $3,490
Darren:    $3,410

I have a feeling the "main" game I've played in every games night for the last two months has been designed by Martin Wallace! I have promised my brain that I will take a bit of a break soon, and play some shorter stuff! This was a very impressive win by Mike, who - interestingly - was the first to take a loan (so paid the most interest) and also happily gathered the most loss points, which also cost him more than the rest of us paid. Of course, he also kept his factories open longer, sold a lot of cars through Howard and distributors, and wiped the floor with the rest of us! Following my accidental win in this one on Monday, I can happily report that I am back to mid-table obscurity.

Livingstone

Neil C:    67
Rachel:    53
Sue:    50
Neil H:    39
Dave F:    53    (But donated least to Queen Vic)

I really must play this one again, having played it and enjoyed it once, quite a long time ago! I don't even know if these are good scores or not. Anyway .... Looks like Neil C won this one quite comfortably, while the biggest battle for places came in the middle of the pack. Sadly, Dave didn't donate as much as the others, and was eliminated from the reckoning.

And finally, a game we hadn't played for absolutely ages ......

Saboteur

Rachel:    9
Nick:    8
Darren:    7
David C:    6
Neil H:    5
Roj:    3
Dave F:    1
Sue:    1

Well, we hadn't played this one for a long time! It was actually a 3-0 victory for the good guys, with the top four scorers never having to play the saboteur role. Dave and Sue were Saboteurs twice, with Neil and Roj trying to mess things up once each. But we were actually digging pretty well this evening, so the saboteurs found gold pretty hard to come by.

And that was it for another week. Thanks all for coming, and very nice to welcome David C for his first evening.
