Monday 10th August 2009
There were ten of us in the pub this week, including a couple of special guests ....
Players:
Gordon, Haydn, John K, Mark P, Mel, Melissa, Neil C, Nick, Sue, Suzanne
Games Played:
Three of us were in very early .....
(Paths + Stones + Bonus)
Suzanne:
(13 + 3 + 13) 29
Nick:
(18 + 6 + 1) 25
Sue:
(15 + 2 + 3) 20
A good win for Suzanne in this one who, although on the table she looked like she was in a weak position, had in fact picked up as three times as many bonus points than Sue and I had between us! We all went for four paths, but I grabbed second thanks to nabbing a bunch of the Wishing Stones.
And then we were up to seven, which - unfortunately for me - meant we were playing:.
Suzanne:
336
Gordon: 181
Melissa: 162
Haydn: 146
Nick: 144
Sue: 104
Neil: 57
Well, at least I found the score-sheet for this one! Otherwise we'd have never got to find out that Suzanne won - and fairly comfortably at that! I have a sneaky feeling that fifth might be my best-ever finish too! Oddly, people seem to have started paying for position in this one, just scoring enough to get past my score, then banking. This may call for a whole new change of strategy!
And now we were up to ten players, so we split into two groups ....
Haydn:
34
Neil:
25
John: 22
Melissa: 19
Mel:
18
Melissa had brought this game with her, and was happy to teach it. The title translates as "... but with cream, please", and it was suggested by Melissa as "the whipped cream game", which meant that four others had volunteered to play before you could say "I think I'm at the wrong games night". As you can probably tell, I'm just waffling (no pun intended) here, as I haven't the faintest idea how the game plays, what it's really about, or how Haydn managed to win so comfortably!
(Buildings/Ships + Cash + Bonus)
Mark:
(88 + 23 + 7) 118
Gordon:
(90 + 7 + 20) 117
Sue: (54 + 54 + 0) 108
Nick: (50 + 48 + 0) 98
Suzanne: (68 + 20 +
0) 88
This was Suzanne's first game, but the rest of us had a varying amount of experience. A good close win for Mark over Gordon, who - when you look at the score breakdown - were the two guys who went for as many buildings as they could. Sue grabbed most of her points from selling sandwiches, while I tried a shipping strategy - By the end of the game, I had three ships and could sell ten goods at the Shipping Lines, but sadly I hadn't had enough time to get myself ten expensive goods! Suzanne did very well for a first game, which - in a game like this one - is always going to be a learning game.
Haydn:
13
John:
13
Mel: 12
Neil:
12
Melissa had also kindly brought the prototype for this new game along, and was quite happy to teach the game and not join in! The game should last for nine rounds, but they called it quits after about seven, I believe, to coincide with our finishing Le Havre. Again, I know nothing about the scores, although Haydn did edge John on the official tie-breaker, and likewise Mel pushed Neil into last by the same method. The game was enjoyed by all four players, though, and I think we're all looking forward to seeing the final version at Essen.
And finally ....
Sue:
27
Nick:
21
John: 20
Neil: 19
Melissa: 9
Haydn:
0
This is one that we hadn't played for a little while, so it was a nice change to finish with, and possibly a little quicker than Saboteur would have been! A comfortable win for Sue who - as usual - took the cowardly "I'm off, and taking all these shiny things with me" approach to the game, disappearing early in each mine and earning a load more than the rest of us. Haydn was having a pretty good night up to this point, too!
And that was all we had time for this week. Thanks to those that came along, and a special thanks to John and Melissa, who each came a fair bit out of their way to join us.
