How to find Shire Games

Thursday 23rd April 2009

An even ten gamers in the shop this week.  And I even turned up, which I hadn't done for a while, it felt like.

Players:

Alex, Darren, David H, Jahaan, Mark P, Nick, Rachel, Roj, Simone, Sue

Games Played:

Excape

Simone:    21
Nick:    17
David H:    13
Roj:    12
Jahaan:    5
Alex:    2

This is a great little opener, especially when there's six of you knocking around. Simone and I both had a turn where we removed our 76 from the ladder and took our five steps, and then immediately re-rolled 76 and put it back!  Only Simone did it twice :)

For Sale

Darren:    75
Rachel:    62
Mark P:    59

Meanwhile, the other three turned up and played this quickie while they were waiting for us to finish.

After a stupid amount of deliberation, we eventually split into a five and a four (as Sue was wisely staying out of it) ....

Four of us were off to Majorca ....

Finca

(Fruit + Finca + Bonus)

Nick:    (33 + 10 + 7)    50
Rachel:    (29 + 5 + 6)    40
Mark P:    (31 + 5 + 0)    36    (6)
Simone:    (31 + 5 + 0)    36    (3)

This was new to the four of us, and we all really enjoyed it. It uses that great Pompeii/Emerald movement system, but uses it for how many you move and how much stuff you get, which is nice. Plus it has another great mechanism where, if there aren't enough of a fruit for someone to take, everyone has to put all of that particular fruit back in the supply. I made good use of this a couple of times, removing all of Mark's nuts just as he was about to use them. A lot of fun, and very close scoring when you look at the fruit tiles collected, means that winning and losing this game looks like it'll hang on how many bonus tiles you set yourself up for.

And the other five were off to ... erm ... Hermagor, I guess.

Hermagor

Darren:    145
David H:    131
Roj:    121
Alex:    92
Jahaan:    70

There's some pretty big scoring in this one, and a very good total from Darren. Everyone had seemed to enjoy it, when they finally reappeared downstairs.

Jamaica

(Points + Coins + Treasure)

Nick:    (5 + 25 + 2)    32
Mark P:    (15 + 10 + 0)    25
Simone:    (8 + 7 + 3)    18
Sue:    (-5 + 12 + 10)    17
Rachel:    (-5 + 21 - 2)    14

This was a lot of fun, as always. Mark raced off, and looked like he had the whole thing sewn up, but then lingered near the finish line, a little bit like Dastardly and Muttley used to, just to pick up a few more coins before finishing. I used this extra turn to pick up a whole boat load of coins and jettison all my gunpowder, and then sat there praying that no one would attack me before the game ended! As it turns out, that extra gold won it for me!

Meanwhile upstairs, they were off to a different set of Spanish islands ....

Islas Canarias

Alex:    23
Darren:    22
Roj:    22
David H:    16
Jahaan:    13

This looks like it was a very tight game, between the top three players anyway. Apart from that, I don't know much about how this one went!

And finally, the downstairs group had time for a quick closer .....

Coloretto

Nick:    (31 + 33 + 31 + 39)    134
Rachel:    (27 + 35 + 21 + 31)    114
Simone:    (30 + 22 + 18 + 28)    98
Sue:    (19 + 22 + 33 + 21)    95

Hmm ... I should stay away from games night more often! A hat-trick of wins for me in a game which I always really enjoy when we play it. When anyone would choose to play Zooloretto when this little card game does the same job so well is a little beyond me. It was also quite nice to play the full four hands, as we usually just play this while waiting for another group to finish their game.

And that was it for another week.  Thanks to all who came along.  See you in the pub on Monday (woohoo!)
