How to find Shire Games

Thursday 21st May 2009

Eight of us in the shop this week.

Players:

Darren, Dave F, Mike, Nick, Rachel, Roj, Sue, Tim

Games Played:

There were four of us in nice and early, so we played this little starter to fill 15 minutes ....

Keltis - Der Weg der Steine

(Paths + Stones + Bonuses)

Dave F:    (13 + 6 + 11)    30
Mike:    (14 + 6 + 3)    23
Roj:    (10 - 3 + 5)    12
Nick:    (3 - 3 + 0)    0

Hmm .... This wasn't my best performance at this one. This game is far more fun than it should be considering how simple and quick it is! Dave and Mike did well picking up tiles, while Roj and I - who had foolishly gone for an almost identical mix of colours - also did well at flipping over tiles for Dave and Mike. In the end, it was Dave's large collection of bonus points that won him the game.

We were now up to seven, and decided to play our usual 7-player game while we wait for anyone else ...

Nottingham

Darren:    53
Roj:    51
Dave F:    47
Rachel:    43
Sue:    38
Nick:    33
Mike:    32

Always a good game, this one actually ended because the Sheriff had finished his walk through the forest, rather than by us all collecting the special cards. this is possibly because we were all collecting for the last "one of each" card, and when that went, we had to switch to chasing the "five of a kind", which is kind of the opposite plan! A good win for Darren in a pretty close game.

Now we decided to split into two groups ....

Snow Tails

Race 1    (Nutcracker)

Dave F:    1st
Roj:    2nd
Darren:    3rd

Race 2    (Treemendous?)

Roj:    1st
Dave F:    2nd
Darren:    3rd

This went down very well with the three of them, although it looks like Roj and Dave got to grips with it a little quicker! I haven't tried a scenario with trees yet, but it looked like a lot of fun when I nipped upstairs - and a good leveller too, if the leader is going to collect a few saplings on his way through; although having said that, I'd just missed Roj successfully negotiate the forest unscathed!

Small World

Mike:    95
Rachel:    91
Nick:    90
Sue:    83

Another excellent game of this one, and another very close count-up at the end. This was Rachel's first game, and also Mike's, although he had played Vinci before. no one was quite sure who was winning, so we all picked on Sue for a bit. Mike's Amazons earned him a fair amount of points, while Rachel came rushing back into the game in the second half, thanks to her Ghouls and Trolls doing some serious damage.

Tim arrived upstairs. Well, he came in through the door, but then went upstairs.

Sushizock im Gockelwok

Dave F:    4
Darren:    2
Roj:    2
Tim:    1

There was a lot of cheering and groaning coming from upstairs with this one ... I heard it was mainly due to some spectacular dice-rolling from Darren!

We mixed the groups up a little .....

Hab & Gut

Roj:    £1,555        (£830 to charity)
Dave F:    £1,175        (£1020)
Nick:    £1,090        (£825)
Tim:    £875        (£685)

Another good game of this new stock-market game, and this one went much faster for some reason. Yet again, the player who gave the least to charity was also already out of the reckoning for some reason, but this time it didn't end with all of the stock prices going through the roof, as a couple of them dropped quite a bit before the end.

Finca

(Tiles + Bonuses + Tokens)

Rachel:    (29 + 20 + 6)    55
Darren:    (27 + 16 + 6)    49
Mike:    (31 + 7 + 6)    44
Sue:    (35 + 5 + 0)    40

Another pretty tight game of this one - It always seems to come down to the bonus tiles, as fruit sold seems to be pretty similar for everyone. It was Mike's and Darren's first games, and - as I understand - thoroughly enjoyed by all.

And finally, for a bit of a change .....

Wits & Wagers

Sue:    16
Rachel:    12
Roj:    9
Dave F:    7
Darren:    3
Tim:    3
Nick:    2

I suppose we could take away the two that everyone starts with, but then my score would look even more embarrassing! To be fair to me, I did get a question or two correct, and won a few bets, however I gambled a load of cash (as we all did) on a completely bad guess as to how long OJ Simpson's trial lasted, which cost us all a little bit! Apart from Roj, who got it within two days, which surprised him as much as the rest of us!

And that excellent game was a great way to end a really fun evening. Thanks to all who came along - See you in a week (Bank Holiday on Monday, again!)
