How to find Shire Games

Thursday 14th May 2009

Nine of us once more in the shop this week, for the third week running.

Players:

Andy B, Jahaan, Jon, Mark L, Mike, Neil C, Nick, Richard, Sue

Games Played:

Hmm ... I just noticed that last week the two groups were kind of kept apart thanks to bad timings of games, and the same thing happened this week too ....

Hab & Gut

Richard:    £755    (£810 to charity)
N
ick:    £755    (£750)
Sue:    £740    (£710)
Mark L:    £720    (£950)
Jahaan:    £360    (£695)

Our first playing of this fun and fast stock market game, and we get a tie! I listed Richard ahead, as he claimed that giving more to charity meant that he'd earned more than me in the game, which is true, but not mentioned in the rules, so I'm ignoring it.  Jahaan gave the least to charity and was duly eliminated from the game. Mark had a good chance to win, as he made a large last-minute donation which proved to be completely unnecessary, and actually cost him a couple of hundred quid!

Meanwhile upstairs .....

Notre Dame

Mike:    46
Jon:    42
Andy:    35
Neil C:    31

This looked like a fun game (although I only got a brief glimpse). Scores seem a little low to me, but it is a while since I've played ... Maybe the rats became a little more of a problem than usual. A good win for Mike, either way.

Ra

Mark L:    43
Richard:    37
Nick:    30
Sue:    22
Jahaan:    19

in an effort to coincide the timings of the two groups, we went off to Egypt (didn't work ... they finished Notre Dame well before we were done here). Mark had a very beneficial last auction in the first and second rounds, while I tried the "only guy left" route in the final round, but it didn't help me enough. Mark also got the highest Sun total at the end, with me on the lowest (one behind Richard ... grrr!), which meant the scores went from 38-37-35 to 43-37-30. It didn't change the outcome, but it just made Mark's win look better than it really was. So there.

Snow Tails

Mike:    1st
Andy:    2nd
Jon:    3rd
Neil:    4th

A fun racing game that Sue and I have played, but want to play with more players.  I have no idea how this game went, however, although Mike and Neil managed to keep their positions from the previous game!  Which was much better for Mike than Neil :)

Small World

Sue:    82
Mark L:    76
Nick:    72
Jahaan:    71
Richard:    71

Yet again, this game proved to be a load of fun. Sue started off with a small handful of Dwarves, which actually served her pretty well as Mark's Amazons started out strong but got picked on pretty quickly (which only seems fair). I think I went one turn too long with my little humans, but there was one more field I could get to, and just couldn't resist. Mark switched to Dragon Master Halflings, which put a big dent in my Troll's plans, but all this time Sue's little miners were still raking in cash as we fought each other on the other side of the board!  Although, to be fair, Sue did a very good job of defending them from an invasion of Giants by building a barrier of Orcs.

Metro

Neil:    62
Andy:    55
Mike:    47
Jon:    46

And Neil bounces back from two straight defeats with a magnificent win in this fun little tile-placement game. I know nothing else about this one, really ... I should pay more attention.

And last but not least .....

Eine Frage der Ähre

Richard:    154
Nick:    140
Mark L:    109
Neil C:    104

We all enjoyed this one, as per usual. I was first to a farmhouse, but was soon followed by everyone else (apart from Mark ... he was a bit behind in the house-building department). However, Richard was the one who really raced to his second farm, and the few turns that this scores before we caught him up could well have made the difference. Right at the very last turn of the game, I managed to overhaul his lead and get in front, but I knew that my two cows - even though they were pretty big ones - weren't going to be a match for the menagerie Richard had managed to collect by the end of the game!

And that was all we had time for this week. Thanks to those who came along.
