How to find Shire Games

Monday 8th June 2009

Nine of us in the pub this week .....

Players:

Darren, Gordon, Mark H, Mark P, Mel, Nick, Rachel, Sue, Suzanne

Games Played:

Keltis - Der Weg der Steine

The first four of us in decided on this quick opener ....

(Paths + Gems + Bonus)

Sue:    (9 + 3 + 8)    20
Nick:    (11 + 2 + 6)    19
Mel:    (9 + 3 + 4)    16
Mark P:    (12 - 3 + 2)    11

Very quick and very fun, as always. Mel kept doing me the favour of flipping tiles that I wanted and she didn't, while Sue did the smart thing and went for colours/directions that the rest of us weren't interested in, meaning she almost always had a selection of face-up stones to choose from!

And then, suddenly, we were up to nine players. This was the choice of the five ....

Small World

Mark H:    84
Mel:    83
Suzanne:    80
Sue:    78
Rachel
:    75

A very tight game of this one, by the look of it. Sadly, I was a little too engrossed in what I was doing to see how this one was going - All I managed to do was have a sneaky look at who Sue was pinning her hopes on! I think 84 is a low winning score compared to some of our other games, but a nine point spread from first to last possibly makes Rachel's 75 the highest 5th-place score!

Sylla

Mark P:    65
Gordon:    56
Nick:    52
Darren:    47

And another excellent game of this one as well. A very odd game, in that all of the events early on were "killers", and there were none of the more harmless "token-movers". So, by the second round of the game, all of the Senators were dead and no one was picking new ones up. Actually, that's not quite true - I foolishly picked up a Christian Senator when both the Persecution and Senate events were out, then realised he was almost certain to get killed one way or the other (which he did)! Mark got his second field a couple of rounds earlier than I did, and Darren missed out on the fields completely, which hurt him a fair bit. Although, oddly, famine never quite reached the end of the track, despite the Granary not being in the game.

We all really enjoyed this one - I did especially, as it played very differently to how it had played every other time I'd been involved in a game!

The first group had time for a quick filler ....

Excape

Mel:    21
Sue:    17
Rachel:    9
Suzanne:    5
Mark H:    0

It looks like Mark's luck ran out after winning Small World! A good win for Mel in what seems to have been somewhat of a two-horse race.

A few people had to leave, which left us with 6 players and about an hour ....

Powerboats

Rachel:    24
Nick:    22
Suzanne:    21
Darren:    14
Sue:    9
Mark H:    0

This was everyone's first game of this one, and a lot of fun it was too. It was quite surprising how many different routes it was possible to take to get to the first buoy, as we all set off in completely random directions! We were all busy laughing at how wide Sue had gone, when she took a wide, sweeping turn around the first buoy at high speed and jumped miles into the lead in race 1. Luckily, we all managed to catch her up by the finish. Mark had a bit of problems with the edge of the lake, and had to perform a few three-point turns to get round the buoys. Meanwhile, Rachel, Suzanne and I were racing off and shared a lot of the first places between us. This was a fun game, although it was pretty chaotic with six boats on the lake!

And that was it for another week. There's no Thursday meeting this week (as we're off to the cricket), so the next time we all get together will be back in the pub on Monday. See you then.
