How to find Shire Games

Monday 6th April 2009

There were eleven (grrr!) of us in the pub this week ....

Players:

Darren, David F-F, David H, Haydn, Lesley, Mark H, Nick, Rich, Simone, Sue, Suzanne

Games Played:

The first six in chose Sushi as a starter ....

Sushizock im Gockelwok

Rich:    9
Simone:    5
Lesley:    1
David H:    0
Darren:    -3
Haydn:    -5

This was a pretty good win for Rich, in a game which - at one point - looked like everyone had a negative score!

All of a sudden, ten of us were stood around, so we split into two groups of five ....

El Grande

Nick:    92
David H:    83
Haydn:    77
Darren:    70
Sue:    63

This is always a good game, especially when there's five people ... In fact, I'm not sure I'd want to play it with any less, to be honest. After two scorings, the five of us were pretty close together on the track, but I managed to make the most of a couple of special scorings to nudge ahead as the final scoring approached, and then got a very good result in Castillo-emptying, which allowed me to steal Darren's home from under his nose!

Valdora

And the other five were off to .... erm .... wherever this is set:

Simone:    91    (4 coins)
Lesley:    91    (1 coin)
Rich:    90
David F-F:    85
Suzanne:    81

This looks like it was incredibly close, with just ten points separating first and last. I remember leaning over at the start of the game and telling Suzanne that I won this the first time out by going for the big contracts, and later on I noticed that she'd taken my advice and done the same ... Obviously that strategy doesn't always work!  A good win for Simone, grabbing it on a tie-breaker from Lesley, the pair of them a single point ahead of Rich!

We were now up to eleven, and split into three groups ....

Manhattan

Lesley:    41
Mark
H:    38
Haydn:    35
Rich:    34

Another very close game looking at the scores.  I don't know much about this one, but I do know they included the "Godzilla" variant, which is the only way to play in my book.

Sylla

Another three were off to Rome ....

Darren:    63
David F-F:    52
Sue:    42

And this one doesn't look at all close! Darren pulled off a good win here, but again I don't know much about it (I was in a different bit of the pub, and getting very confused over Royal Palace!).

Royal Palace

(Tiles + Edges + Cards)

David H:    (53 + 2 + 5)    60
Simone:    (51 + 8 + 0)    59
Nick:    (38 + 8 + 1)    47
Suzanne:    (36 + 8 + 0)    44

There's quite a lot going on in this one, and it's one of those which is quite confusing to explain or listen to the rules, but then when you play it it all seems to make a lot more sense! Suzanne and I made a few basic errors, and Simone and David had played before, which is pretty obvious from the scores, and from the fact that halfway through the game, we newbies noticed that the pool of extra dudes had been pretty much depleted in Simone and David's colours, and there were no more of those dude-getting tiles left on the board!

And while I was downstairs, they snuck a game of this in .....

Dancing Dice

Mark H:    Survivor!
Lesley:    Last to drop
Sue:    3rd
Haydn:    4th
Darren:    5th
David F-F:    First to go

Well ... the undisputed king of Dancing Dice fell at the first hurdle! Although there is an outside chance I'm reading this scoresheet wrong, in which case he won yet again.  No doubt someone will tell me.

And that was it for another week. We've got a 10-day gaming break for Easter now, back on Thursday 16th April at the shop.
