How to find Shire Games

Monday 30th March 2009

Just the eight of us in the pub this week.

Players:

Darren, David H, Gordon, Nick, Rachel, Simone, Sue, Suzanne

Games Played:

Seven of us were in pretty early for a change, so it was obviously time for ...

Hoppladi Hopplada

Gordon:    333
Sue:    255
David H:    235
Simone:    204
Rachel:    169
Darren:    158
Nick:    52

This was Gordon's first game of this one, and he played it exactly how you need to win .... saving little and often. Of course, with me following him, that should have put me in a good "cashing in on that strategy" position, but amazingly I had trouble scoring any points knowing when to stop.

We split into two groups of four, and the girls went off to play with camels ....

Yspahan

Simone:    76
Suzanne:    71
Rachel:    68
Sue:    65

I think this one took a couple of false starts before the game got going properly (a bit of confusion about how the dice should be stacked), but eventually it got underway and was very much enjoyed by all. Sue was too busy teaching to concentrate on her own game, obviously.

And the guys finally got to play .....

Ming Dynasty

Gordon:    183
Nick:    178
David H:    175
Darren:    157

This was a very good game, although a bit of a brain-burner! I read through the rules, and we all immediately understood how to play, but we all hadn't a clue about exactly how it was going to work until about half way through the third round! I pretty much neglected temples until the final round, which actually - and quite surprisingly - seemed to work quite well. Both David and I were going for a fourth set of tiles, and we both fell one short. Gordon scored pretty well on the majorities in the final round, and it was enough to keep him in front. A solid game, and one I've been trying to play since Essen 2007!

Stone Age

Suzanne:    199
Sue:    160
Rachel:    140
Simone:    130

The girls went back to the Stone Age, and Suzanne absolutely commanded this one (we think she's been practising). When I looked over, she was miles ahead on the score track, so you would expect that she was a little behind on cards, but no ... she had loads of them too!

Roll Through the Ages

Nick:    23
Darren:    22
David H:    8

The three remaining guys played this quickie to time the end with the Stone Agers. David was going the city-heavy route, quickly getting up to 6 dice while Darren and I still had 4, but I managed to get the extra stone along with the "stone-into-workers" and set about building monuments and spending loads to end the game quickly. Luckily, I was just in front of Darren when I did!

Diamant

Rachel:    43
Simone:    39
Darren:    38
David H:    34
Nick:    30
Sue:    14

This was a very rich game of Diamant. In fact, we all had to put 5 gems back into the supply at one point just to keep going!  A very fun game, as the lead changed so much no one was quite sure who was on top.

And that was it for another week. See you all next time.
