Monday 26th January 2009
Just the nine of us in this week, which is much easier to divide up than eleven. So that was nice.
Players:
Darren, David H, Nick, Rachel, Rich, Simone, Sue, Suzanne, Tim
Games Played:
Sue and I interrupted as the early birds were about to set up a five player game, so the seven of us went mining ....
Simone:
35
Darren:
18
Sue: 17
Rich: 15
David: 13
Nick:

Rachel:

The first mine was full of poison gas and no one even got in. Then Sue and I left the second mine early with 6 gems apiece. However, Simone ended up in there by herself as all the others had quite at the same time, greedily squabbling over a few gems on the floor, and she managed to find a whole stash of gems all to herself, which meant that the rest of us had to try and catch up (unsuccessfully). I kept being left in with Rachel, who we all know is cursed.
We were now up to 8 players, and split into two groups .....
(Points + Symbols + Tools + Builders + Shamen + Farmers + Resources)
Rachel:
(112 + 0 + 48 + 32 + 14 + 0 + 5) 211
Suzanne:
(95 + 65 + 6 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 2) 168
Nick: (65 + 4 + 0 + 0 + 50 + 42 + 5) 166
Sue:
(80 + 25 + 0 + 35 + 0 + 0 + 2) 142
This was a fun game, as always, and another one ticked off my "it's about time I played all my favourite games again" list. I was concentrating on people and farms, although the farms dried up a little as everyone kept taking them (and Suzanne and I kept getting last choices on the "distribution" cards). Sue was going for buildings, while Rachel was after buildings and tools, which worked quite well as no one else wanted the toolmakers! A good win for Rach.
Simone:
83
David:
59
Darren: 58
Rich:
47
Simone wiped the floor with them all in this one, by getting a pretty impressive forest built in her gardens, and then making sure she was on maximum points for those trees. Everyone else was trying to get a decent-looking landscaped garden, and scoring much less than the one that was basically just overrun with trees.
Both games pretty much finished at the same time. Tim arrived and Simone dropped out, so we split again into two fours ....
Rich:
40
Rachel:
35
Tim: 32
Suzanne:
30
This looks like it was a pretty close game, with ten points separating first from last. A good win for Rich, which I think ends a bit of a barren spell :-)
(Points + Colonies + Cards + Cash + Plantations + Bonus Tiles)
David:
(25 + 10 + 11 + 3 + 0 + 0) 49
Darren:
(29 + 10 + 2 + 0 + 1 + 3) 45
Sue: (25 + 10 + 3 + 0 + 0 + 0) 38
Nick:
(26 + 6 + 5 + 0 + 0 + 0) 37
This game was new to Darren and David, so they did pretty well there (although Sue and I were teaching, so obviously we weren't concentrating fully on our own game, and we went easy on them). David upgraded his Expedition track to the bottom, and set about collecting as many cards as he could, with his 11 points winning him the game. I couldn't get my fourth Colony founded, which put me firmly in last place.
And the Hanging Gardens crowd had time for another quickie...
Tim:
9
Rich:
8
Rachel: 7
Suzanne:
6
This sounded like it was a lot of fun, although I was too busy losing in Goa to pay it too much attention. My guess is the Volcano erupted pretty early, based on the number of escapees. A good win for Tim and - unusually - not one that had to be decided by the tie-breaker!
And that was all we had time for this week. Thanks to those who came along.
