How to find Shire Games

Thursday 19th February 2009

A nice round ten gamers in tonight, including the surprise return of Mark L  ....

Players:

Darren, David H, Jon, Mark L, Nick, Rachel, Rich, Roj, Simone, Sue

Games Played:

Money

The first four of us decided to quickly unpack this fun little opener before anyone else arrived. Of course, everyone immediately arrived then.

Sue:    620
Roj:    550
Nick:    500
Mark:    410

A fun little game this is, and one that Sue seems to be particularly good at. Perhaps it's something to do with it being about collecting money!

We were up to 10 now, so split into two groups of 5 ....

Container

This was the choice of the upstairs crowd ...

Rachel:    130
Simone:    115
Rich:    103
David H:    85
Sue:    73

I don't know a whole lot about this one, although there was quite a lot of noise coming from upstairs, and I'd never thought of it as a particularly noisy game!

And the other group were off to France ....

Le Havre

(Buildings & Ships + Cash + Bonuses)

Nick:    (88 + 41 + 0)    129
Mark:    (86 + 25 + 7)    118
Darren:    (68 + 44 + 0)    112
Jon:    (98 + 1 + 7)    106
Roj:    (66 + 16 + 8)    90

Another excellent game of this one. I'm beginning to think I enjoy it more than Agricola, although maybe that's because it's still a lot newer .... We shall have to see over time. Plus, I won this game for the first time, so maybe my judgment is clouded there as well! I built up some small buildings early, although selling to the Diner for 24 cash about half way through seemed to give me a bit of a boost; after that it was just a case of saving up for a luxury liner which, luckily, I was first in the queue to build. Darren and Roj seemed to have no good choices early on, and ended up collecting a ton of resources. Roj got into debt, which seemed to hold him back a fair bit. Darren had both Wharves, but they weren't used perhaps as much as he'd hoped. Jon had built some fairly popular buildings which kept him ticking along, and Mark was pretty much the same ... his Abattoir was very popular, but sadly people were saving up great big herds of cows and only going there infrequently.  Excellent stuff.

Dominion

The upstairs lot were done first ....

Rachel:    36
Sue:    36
Simone:    21
David H:    16
Rich:    16

A shared win for Rachel and Sue, who had both taken the same number of turns. And a shared loss for David and Rich too!

Seven of us re-jigged the groups ....

Roll Through the Ages

Sue:    21
Rachel:    16
Mark:    11

This seems like a very low-scoring game of this one. Someone obviously ended it quickly when they decided they were in front (Sue?).

Dominion

And another game of this fun card game, which Roj had been wanting to try ....

David H:    30
Simone:    28
Roj:    24
Darren:    9

Another low-scoring game (I'm guessing there may have been some cursing going on in this one), with David just edging out Simone for a good win. Roj scored pretty well in this one too, as it can be a game that punishes the first-timer ... especially against people that have played a few times.

Saboteur

And then the seven of us ended up with a quick visit to the mine .....

Mark:    11
Darren:    6
Rachel:    5
David H:    4
Nick:    4
Roj:    3
Sue:    0

Well ... we couldn't let Mark come back and not win anything, could we? Mark managed to be honest three times in a game where honesty was obviously paying off (either that, or the Saboteurs were a bit crap). Sue was a three-time saboteur, which didn't go exactly well.

And that was it for another week. Thanks to those who came along. Sue and I won't be in the pub on Monday, but go along and have fun anyway!
