How to find Shire Games

Monday 16th February 2009

Unlucky for some ... we managed to get thirteen of us in the pub this week!

Players:

Darren, David F-F, David H, Faye, Haydn, Lesley, Neil C, Nick, Rachel, Rich, Simone, Sue, Suzanne

Games Played:

Cheeky Monkey

Sue and I arrived a couple of minutes later than usual, and the miserable lot had started without us ....

Simone:    32
Rachel:    23
Rich:    21
David H:    16
Darren:    3

Darren got off to a flying start in this one, but it didn't last!

6 Takes!

Nick:    1
Rachel:    28
Neil:    29
David H:    36
Darren:    41
Sue:    47
Simone:    70
Rich:    85

Now ... I know that I should be really pleased with my score of 1 in a game where you always get stung for a bunch of points at some stage, but my single point came with the very last card of the very last hand, so it was actually quite disappointing that I didn't make the magic zero! Rich wins the prize for highest score I can remember for this game!

And by now we were up to the full thirteen players ....

Municipium

Darren:    5
Nick:    4    (13)
Sue:    4    (12)
Rachel:    4    (3)

This is a fun little game, and another in the series of "games I own but haven't played yet". The ending was very close, as we all had managed to get four coins and were waiting for the fifth. There was an odd bit in the middle of the game where we pretty much all went to the Forum with every person we had, just to stop Darren winning, but obviously he still got there in the end!

Roll Through the Ages

David H:    31
Rich:    18
Simone:    15
Neil:    12

Wow .... this is a bit of a one-sided score for what is normally quite a close game!  I'm not sure which route David took to get there (unless it was a series of Pestilences), but whatever it was, it worked pretty well!

The Da Vinci Code Board Game: The Quest for Truth

David got this for Christmas, and this group were struggling to find a five-player game they all wanted to play ....

David F-F:    Winner (by quite some margin)
Faye:
Haydn:
Lesley:
Suzanne:    All failed to win.

I have no idea what happened here, as there's no mention of it on the scoresheet. I don't think it went down particularly well, although David seemed to be enjoying himself!

Dominion

Simone:    25
David H:    23
Rich:    19
Neil:    7

This was played by the Roll Through the Ages crowd to catch up with the rest of us. There was a random selection of cards, including five "cost 5" cards, which meant the game went on a little longer than normal!

We were all done at the same time, so we shuffled around a little and made three groups of four ....

Tinner's Trail

Nick:    100
Darren:    92
David H:    91
Neil:    86

Another excellent game of this wonderful Cornish mining game, although this one was very cash-poor from the outset, as Neil set some very low prices which never really recovered throughout the four rounds of the game. In the third round, I think I was the only one who made any sort of investment at all, as both Neil and David did no mining, and then we all went a bit mad for copper and tin in the final round, to the point where some of us couldn't buy any investments, as there were none left to buy! In the end, no one was more surprised than me that I came out on top, as we were all convinced Neil had us beat!

Humans!!!

Haydn:    11
Faye:    6
Lesley:    4
Rich:    4

I haven't the faintest idea about this one, to be honest. Someone may have tried to explain, but I have a feeling I wasn't really paying attention! All we can do is assume it is the highest score that wins, in which case ... well done, Haydn!

Dominion

Game 1        (Starter Deck)

David F-F:    31
Sue:    18
Suzanne:    16
Rachel:    14

Game 2        (Random Deck)

Suzanne:    37
David F-F
:    33
Rachel:    25
Sue:    21

And this is Suzanne's first win at Shire Gamers, so it's no surprise to find out that she enjoys playing Dominion! A pretty good score there in that second game, as well.

And after all those games, we were left with ten gamers ...

Saboteur

David F-F:    6
Faye:    6
Haydn:    5
Neil:    3
Nick:    3
Sue:    3
Lesley:    2
Rachel:    2
Darren:    0
David H:    0

Our regular closer was a lot of fun as always. It's been a long time since we've played it with the full 10 people, and - bizarrely - after two rounds no one person had more than one gold card, thanks to wins by the saboteurs. So there were three guys on 3 and four guys on 2 as the final round approached. Sadly (for me, at least) the honest dwarves succeeded in finding the gold in the last round, giving Faye and David a couple more gold cards and a shared win. On a personal plus-side, I went undetected as a saboteur in the final round; of course, this could mean that I helped the honest guys a little too much!

And that ended a busy night of gaming at the pub. Thanks all for coming out ... Sue and I won't be there next Monday, but several others will (just remember to pack some games)
