How to find Shire Games

Monday 9th March 2009

Just the nine of us in the pub this week ....

Players:

Darren, David H, Mark P, Mel, Nick, Rachel, Simone, Sue, Suzanne

Games Played:

Six of us were in nice and early, and this game had been almost played once or twice before ....

Take 5

David H:    18
Darren:    16
Sue:    12
Rachel:    10
Simone:    -8
Nick:    -32

Despite that score, I really liked this one. Much better than 6 Takes!, a lot less random, a bit more tense, and a lot shorter. Darren used his cards early which looked like a better decision the longer the game went on, but David picked up a very useful set of cards right at the death (thanks to me picking up a rubbish set and saving him), which just allowed him to edge ahead for the win.

Der Name der Rose

Simone:    36
Mel:    37
Darren:    42
Rachel:    42
Suzanne:    48

I believe this is the first time in this game that the orange Monk didn't win (at least in the games I've seen or played). Simone managed to just stay in front of Mel, despite having three out of four people guess her colour. Of course, having just typed that, I have no idea how many people guessed Mel, so it could be that she was overtaken right at the death!

Sylla

Nick:    59
Sue:    52
David H:    50
Mark:    49

Having played this for the first time on Sunday, Sue and I were very keen to try it again. So we did. I was receiving more coins than the others at the income phase, and coupled with my Senators it helped me on scoring lots of points for the Wonders. David had amassed a whole bunch of "Health" tokens, which he managed to manipulate into being worth a whole bunch at the end of the game, bringing him and Mark right back into contention, and closing the scores up rather tightly! An excellent game ... A definite return to form from Ystari, and one of those games that ends with a big discussion of how we all could have done better!

For Sale

Rachel:    73
Darren:    56
Mel:    46    (1)
Suzanne:    46    (0)

I have no idea how this one went, as I was a little engrossed in the political happenings in Ancient Rome at the time. To be honest, I'm not sure what the tie-breaker is, although it might well be cash left over that separated Mel from Suzanne for last spot. Actually, come to think of it, there's not a lot else it could be!

We mixed the groups up a little ......

Puerto Rico

(VP + Buildings + Bonus)

David H:    (22 + 22 + 11)    55
Darren:    (25 + 16 + 6)    47
Mel:    (12 + 14 + 8)    34

David's experience at this one seems to have shone through a bit here!

Pirate's Cove

Mark:    37
Sue:    34
Nick:    27
Rachel:    27
Suzanne:    21

This was a load of fun, and a game that we haven't played for ages! It's always a good laugh, which was a great way to end the night. Mark was dealt Long John Silver's parrot at the start, which was a pretty powerful deal, and we had to counter it by ganging up on him and all agreeing to go to the same island we thought he was going to (while he was at the bar). Sadly, we all lied and it allowed him to get away. Rachel eventually killed his parrot, so he drew another one (unlimited treasures) and spent the rest of the game gathering treasure before going to the middle island and burying sixteen of them!

And the Puerto Ricans ended with this quickie .....

Dominion

David H:    34
Mel:    33
Darren:    27

Sorry ... I don't know much about this game either. But it looks like it was a close one!

And that took us to (about) 11.30 and the end of the night. Thanks all for coming out.
