How to find Shire Games

Thursday 5th March 2009

A chilly and quiet night tonight, with just eight of us in the shop ....

Players:

Darren, Dave F, David H, Mike, Nick, Roj, Simone, Sue

Games Played:

Mow

The first five of us thought we'd start things off with this fun little card game ....

Nick:    (13 + 21 + 13 + 5 + 7 + 9)    68
Dave F:    (20 + 34 + 11 + 7 + 0 + 7)    79
Mike:    (8 + 4 + 3 + 12 + 55 + 4)    86
Sue:    (17 + 4 + 43 + 20 + 5 + 1)    90
Roj:    (16 + 11 + 4 + 29 + 7 + 53)    120

The more observant of you will notice that we're a point short.  Not quite sure what happened to that. This is always a lot of fun, and fairly evil at the same time! Can you spot the round where we all decided Mike was doing much too well? Dave and I started the poorest, and therefore avoided most of the direct targeting in the latter half of the game, flying under the radar into first and second place!

By now we were up to eight players, and made two groups of four (after a little deliberation)

Kingsburg

This was the choice upstairs ....

Darren:    49
Mike:    49
Simone:    42
Dave F:    34

This game actually went through both tie-breakers (goods remaining and buildings constructed) and still ended up as a dead heat! both Darren and Mike had managed that quite impressive score and couldn't be separated. Simone, on the other hand, would have come out on top if it wasn't for a rather vicious band of Demons and a King who couldn't care less, which resulted in the destruction of her Embassy.

Cavum

Roj:    148    (1)
Nick:    148    (3)
Sue:    143
David H:    122

This was the first game for all of us of this one, and it took some learning (and a few hours of playing!). Although the rule book isn't the clearest, to be fair. Roj and I ended up tying for score, and he claimed the victory thanks to bidding more at the start of the third phase and grabbing the "player 1" tile. Although, looking in the FAQ this morning, it turns out that I should have scored twice when I had two stations in the same city, but we weren't to know that. To be fair, I could easily have been streets ahead at the end if I hadn't depleted a vein in the final dig which then disconnected me from two cities, leaving them only connected to each other! It was fairly close going into the final round, but sadly for David he couldn't get the exact gems he needed for his order cards, and had to sell them for less at the market.

Stone Age

(Points + Resources + Symbols + Tools + Builders + Shamen + Farmers)

Dave F:    (91 + 4 + 0 + 0 + 18 + 50 + 24)    187
Darren:    (107 + 2 + 49 + 5 + 0 + 0 + 4)    167
Simone:    (116 + 7 + 9 + 0 + 0 + 9 + 0)    141
Mike:    (67 + 7 + 1 + 0 + 20 + 0 + 0)    95

This scoring makes interesting reading. My guess is that the game ended very quickly, with Simone running through one of the stack of buildings before anyone could really get a good hand of cards. Mike managed a few builders, Darren managed to get seven of the different symbols, and Dave got most of the Shamen, but Simone had practically nothing from the cards, instead building the most valuable huts. In the end, it seems that Dave's Shamen and Farmers won the day.

Sushizock im Gockelwok

And the downstairs lot had a quick game of this one while we waited for Stone Age to finish ...

David H:    7
Nick:    7
Sue:    4
Roj:    -3

Another tied game ... This seems to have been a theme of this week!

All of a sudden, we were down to just four of us, and so it was time to get out a game which I'd just bought from the charity shop for a couple of quid ....

In One Word

Simone & Sue:        10
David H & Nick:        8

This was a lot of fun, and also very tense at the bidding stage. The idea is to get your teammate to say the five words on the card; however not only is a timer making you hurry, but before the round starts the two teams bid on how many clue words they can do it in! If you fail, the opponents get the card. So .... I think there was a total of 6 cards "won", with the other 12 being failed! I believe the girls were successful four times, which us guys only managed a couple.  Loads of fun and laughter though, which was nice.

And that took us to just about midnight.  Thanks all for coming out once more.
