Monday 2nd March 2009
Thirteen of us made it out to the pub this week ......
Players:
Darren, David F-F, David H, Haydn, Mark H, Neil C, Nick, Rachel, Rich, Simone, Sue, Suzanne, Tim
Games Played:
Nine of us were in pretty early, so we played a couple of longer openers .....
Rich:
5 Treasures
Darren: 3
Neil: 2
Nick: 2
Rachel:
3 Lives (as Mummy)
This is a fun family game ... a bit like Scotland Yard / Garibaldi, but a lot shorter and easier to play and explain. Yet there's still a little room for screwage, as the Treasure hunters were trying to make sure Rich died before finding his last treasure. Didn't work, sadly.
David
H: (4 + 6 + 2) 12
Sue: (4 + 4 +
7) 15
Simone: (4 + 8 + 7) 19
Haydn:
(14 + 9 + 6) 29
This looks like it was a pretty tight contest. And fairly low-scoring to boot (which, in this case, is a good thing). A good win for David just a few points ahead of Sue.
We were up to 13 now, so we split into three groups for the longer games of the evening ....
Darren:
(52 + 8) 60 (2)
Neil: (57 + 3)
60 (0)
Haydn: (36 + 8) 44
Simone: (38 + 5) 43
This looks like it was a very tight game. Three of the players were going for forests, and one (Darren, I think) tried to rush the end and get ahead by going for the animal parks. It looks like the animal parks just won out.
Tim:
40 (1 Event tile)
Sue: 40 (0)
Rachel: 45 (2)
Suzanne: 45 (0)
Nick: 47
Well, my mini-undefeated run at this game came to a crashing end as I came last in this one! Rachel's monk got absolutely blasted in the first day, through no fault of her own really, and then at the revelation the other four of us revealed her colour, which was a little freaky, but it made it very hard for Rachel to deny which one she was. However, she was then left alone a little as the other Monks fought amongst themselves. In the final day, William and Adson had double effects, which allowed Rachel to move her dude back 6 points, which was handy. Sue was only guessed by one of us, while the rest were 50/50 at best. In the end, Tim grabbed the win thanks to ending the first day. So ... I've played this three times now, and the orange Monk always wins. Guaranteed.
David H:
81
Mark: 49
David F-F: 47
Rich: 47
Now either I'm reading the score sheet wrong, or this was ever so slightly one-sided! Enjoyed by all, I believe ... I really must play this one again, as I've forgotten pretty much everything about it.
Neil:
39
Haydn: 31
Simone: 29
Darren:
28
The Diamond collectors were the first to finish, so they had a quick go at building some gardens. Neil looks like he got the upper hand in this one, although the scoring is always fairly tight here.
We lost one person, and so reformed into three groups of four .....
Haydn:
21 (3)
Neil:
21 (1)
Mark: 20
Rich: 19
Another game with very tight scoring, and another game tonight that was decided on the tie-breaker! A good win for Haydn, but as close as it can possibly get, with last place only 2 points behind!
Darren:
78
David F-F: 65
Nick: 60
Sue: 54
Yet again, Caylus plays out differently to any game I can remember. Darren ended up with so many resources in the third stage that he was pretty much completely in control of the castle, building 5 batches on his final turn. No one went along the bottom favour track, which made prestige buildings very rare indeed, in fact David was the only one to build one. I started the game going mad in the castle and not building anything, then chickened out and started to build the odd building, but I struggled all game for cash. I was in the pub for two minutes at the start of the game but got booted out by David, who then stayed there for the rest of the game!
Simone:
133
Rachel: 106
Suzanne: 103
David H: 95
I don't know a lot about how this one went, but then again, there's very little you can write about a game of Qwirkle. The four of them laid down a few tiles and scored some points. Looking at the detailed scoring, I would say that Simone managed three Qwirkles, while Rachel and Suzanne had one each.
And finally .....
Haydn:
20 (10)
Neil: 20 (10)
Rachel:
13
A pretty low-scoring game of this one, which means that someone was buying upgrades pretty quickly. Another game that went down to a tie-breaker this evening, but in this case even the tie-breaker (value of remaining goods) couldn't separate the two of them, so they get to share the win.
And that was everything we managed to get played this week. Thanks to all those who came out, and we'll see you all next week.
