Nine of us managed to brave the snow and ice this week .....
Players:
Darren, David F-F, David H, Nick, Rachel, Rich, Simone, Sue, Suzanne
Games Played:
Seven of us were in nice and early .....
Simone:
341
Darren:
285
David H: 191
Rich: 122
Sue: 116
Rachel: 112
Nick:

The less said about this one the better if you ask me. Simone was very unsporting and kept banking small amounts, which is of course by far the most sensible way to play it. Darren got close, but - having gone first - didn't get the chance to catch Simone after she hit the magic 333. It's a silly game anyway.
David F-F and Suzanne arrived, so we split into two groups ....
(Artefacts + Exhibitions + Congress + Knowledge)
Simone:
(41 + 9 + 6 + 8) 64
Suzanne:
(23 + 0 + 21 + 5) 49
Rachel: (31 + 4 + 0 + 8) 43
Rich:
(29 + 0 + 0 + 5) 34
Another win for Simone, who obviously has seeing fingers. It looks like Suzanne was going for a "congress" strategy, but Simone grabbed a few of those cards to stop it getting completely out of hand. Rich's whole plan obviously hinged on a big comeback in year 3, before learning that the game was only going to last two years!
David
F-F: 503
Darren:
501
David H: 448
Sue: 410
Nick:
387
Meanwhile, five of us were off on a distant planet harnessing the power of steam. You wouldn't think, looking at the scores, that Sue and I had played before, would you? Then again ... perhaps our two-player game (where we didn't struggle anywhere near as much for cash, space, resources and tanks did us more harm than good. That's our excuse anyway. I realised about three hours later that I played the final turn all wrong ... saving up for one more tank when I could have bought a bunch of ore extractors and made a mint. Still ... I'd have probably stayed in last place! A very tight game between the top two players, and a very good win for David over Darren, who had beaten him to the final ownership certificate.
Rachel:
45
Rich:
31
Suzanne: 28
Simone:
15
The four Thebians (?) went off to Babylon, which probably wasn't that far (I have no idea) for this quickie while they were waiting for our game to finish. A good win for Rachel, reversing hers & Rich's one-two from last week.
Sue:
21
Darren:
20
David F-F: 18
David H: 18
Nick:
16
Boy, was I having a bad night or what? Again, we played just a single game of this (you're supposed to play a few rounds), and again it provided a lot to think about in a very neat little package. Five points from first to last isn't a lot, and I am definitely keen on giving this a try for three or four rounds to see if it gets even better.
There were just six of us left for our favourite closer ....
We decided to play the "Greedy Dwarf with the Red Jacket" variant, where one honest dwarf (the one with the red jacket) can grab all the gold for himself if he manages to play the connecting card. We had it slightly wrong ... He only gets 4 gold (and no one else gets any), but as no one managed to do it, that is kind of irrelevant! Four rounds followed ....

Sue: 7
Darren: 6
Rachel: 4
David
F-F: 2
A very close fight this one, although I was really just as happy not to come last as I would have been with a win! David collected three times in total (twice when honest, and once as a bad guy), as did Sue. I only collected twice, but both times made the connection for first pick. In the last round, I had the red jacket, but there was no way I was going to connect three times running!
And that was all we had time for this week. Thanks to those who came out in the snow.
