How to find Shire Games

Thursday 16th October 2008

A dozen of us in the shop this week .....

Players:

Alex, Barrie, Darren, Dave F, Gordon, Mark P, Mel, Mike, Nick, Rachel, Sue, Tim

Games Played:

If Wishes were Fishes

The first five in were off for some fishing .....

Mike:    79
Mel:    60
Gordon:    59
Nick:    53
Barrie:    51

This is a fun little game which we hadn't played in a while.  But Mike had requested it, and it was a lot of fun. Apart from me getting done over by Gordon in the final turn, as he decided to kindly give me the majority of fish in the garbage heap, costing me 10 points!  A good win for Mike, who had crept ahead on worm scorings and we just couldn't catch him.

Pandemic

While we were fishing, the next four decided to save the World ....

(Six Epidemic cards!)

Alex:
Darren:
Dave:
Rachel:        All lost.

This was played at the toughest level, and they failed miserably in their quest by letting too many outbreaks occur.

Agricola

We were now up to 11, which quickly became 12 just after we spent 15 minutes deciding how to split 11 up, and so we were now a 5 and a 7 .....

(Fields + Pastures + Grain + Vegetables + Sheep + Pigs + Cows - Unused Spaces + Stables + Rooms + Family + Cards + Bonuses [- Begging Cards])

Nick:    (1 + 3 + 4 - 1 + 1 + 2 - 1 - 0 + 2 + 6 + 12 + 4 + 3)    36
Sue:    (2 + 4 + 1 + 3 + 4 + 1 + 3 - 3 + 0 + 12 + 7)    34
Mike:    (3 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 3 - 1 - 1 - 2 + 0 + 6 + 9 + 3)    32
Gordon:    (4 + 3 + 4 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 - 1 + 0 + 4 + 12 + 1 + 2 [-3])    30
Mark:    (-1 + 2 - 1 - 1 + 4 - 1 + 2 - 7 + 0 + 4 + 6 + 9 [-6])    10

We played with the "I-Deck" in this one.  And this was actually a pretty tight game, with no one feeling they were doing very well. But as it turned out, only Mark was correct!  The rest of us muddled through, with Gordon getting into grain in a big way (which helped Mike out, who was earning food whenever anyone took grain). I also went sowing, but was getting my grain thanks to my outrider, which helped a little. Mark played a card which took him out of the last round (but earned 8 points), but none of us could figure out whether that was a smart move or not! My little bit of planning that I did near the end paid off in the final two rounds, as I extended my clay house and built all my stables in the penultimate round, and then renovated to stone and finished off my fences in round 14. I also had a guest in round 14 which not only gave me an extra action, but scored me three bonus points from a card that Gordon had played, edging me ahead of Sue.

Shadow Hunters

Meanwhile upstairs .....

Darren:    (Daniel -- Neutral)
Dave:    (Allie -- Neutral)            Both won
Alex:    (Vampire -- Shadow)
Barrie:    (Werewolf -- Shadow)
Mel:    (Franklin -- Hunter)
Rachel:    (Charles -- Neutral)
Tim:    (George -- Hunter)        All lost

This looks like a little conspiracy amongst the neutrals.  All Dave had to do to win was stay alive until the end, and all Darren had to do was be the first to die.  So Dave killed him.  Very fishy that, if you ask me .....

Garibaldi

Alex had to leave us, so the other six were off to Austria ....

Darren:
Dave:
Mel:
Rachel:
Tim:        All won as the Austrians
Barrie:    Lost as Garibaldi

This sounds like it was a very tense game, with Garibaldi finally being caught on turn 28 of a possible 30.

Hoity Toity

And finally, after several departures, there were six of us left with not quite enough time for most of the 6-player games we'd brought with us .....

Dave F:    + 4 steps into the Drawing room
Nick:    +1
Darren:    -1
Gordon:    -5
Sue:    -5
Rachel:    -6

This was a lot of fun.  It took me three turns to get going, as I spent the first two in the Castle with nothing to exhibit! Eventually I got moving, and the game then turned into one long thieving session, with cheques and items changing hands fairly rapidly. As the end approached, Dave had edged out a little lead, with the rest of us bunched a few spaces back in second place. I chose to steal in the castle in that final turn, which meant I could halve Dave's best exhibit, but sadly (for me) the lead he built with that final 5 points was enough to keep him in front.  A fun game to end with.

And that was it for another week. Thanks for coming out.
