Thursday 24th July 2008
A very warm evening, and therefore a quiet night in the shop this week ...
Players:
Darren,
Jonathan, Nick, Rachel, Richard, Sue
Games Played:
The first five of us decided on this "quickie" to get us going ....
Nick:
4
Darren:
3
Rachel: 3
Richard: 3
Jonathan:
2
This was a really fun game, although it took a LOT longer than we expected, mainly because we were almost all at the maximum chips before the final bout, and several had been returned to the stack! We were all collecting the same colours, which also didn't help speed things up! A few really tense battles .... There was a point (about 20 minutes before the actual end) when it was all over and I had started writing the scores down (I was in last at this point), only for the fight colour to change and the game to carry on! Luckily, we hadn't all thrown our hands in! Great fun ...
We split into two groups of three for the next 75 minutes or so ....
(Artifacts + Exhibitions + Congress + Majorities)
Sue:
(43 + 8 21 + 11) 83
Nick: (46 + 9 + 0 + 8) 63
Rachel:
(46 + 0 + 3 + 8) 57
For
some reason, Sue seemed to be miles ahead in this one after about 10 minutes!
Before any of us had gone digging, Sue had picked up a bunch of Congress
points. Rachel and I busied ourselves acquiring knowledge, along with
shovels and assistants to help us along, and went off digging for loads of dirt!
Sue probably drew half as many tokens from bags than we each did, and yet
managed to end up with almost as many artifacts, due some incredible luck
skill in digging. The final tally was a foregone conclusion, with Rachel
and I battling to not come last!
And the other three were off farming .....
(Fields + Pastures + Grain + Vegetables + Sheep + Pigs + Cows - Empty spaces + Stables + House + Family + Cards + Bonuses)
Jonathan:
(4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 1 - 0 + 2 + 4 + 15 + 1 + 8) 50
Richard:
(3 + 4 + 1 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 3 - 2 + 1 + 6 + 15 + 3 + 0) 41
Darren: (3 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 3 + 4 -
3 + 0 + 2 + 9 + 9 + 3) 38
I believe this was a mix of the K and E decks, which could well have led to some very unbalanced hands! It looks like Jonathan did a pretty good job in the crops department, grabbing some token animals just to make up the numbers! Darren was busy husbanding a bunch of animals (oo-er), while neglecting his house and family a little by the looks of the scores. Rich's scores look like he did his best to diversify completely, making sure he had the largest stone house and a full family as well.
We were down to 5 players, and formed back into one big group ....
Rachel:
1 Step away from Carthage
Richard:
12 steps away
Nick: 13 steps away
Sue: 16 steps away
Darren:
25 steps away
This could well be the first time ever that our game ended with the Goths reaching Rome, although Rachel was pretty close to Carthage when it happened! As usual, the game was full of screwage (with me taking the brunt of it thanks to sitting on Sue's left - You'd think I'd have learned by now). A good win by Rachel, who managed to get the best "food" stepping machine going just as all players had nothing but green cards left in their hands!
And to end the night .....
Richard:
9
Rachel:
7
Nick: 3
Sue: 1
Darren: 0
A quick round of dice-rolling fun to end the night. Richard had a massive stack of worms going, and despite all of our efforts to reduce it, we never quite got him down to our level!
And that was it for another Thursday. Thanks to all for coming out.
