How to find Shire Games

Monday 22nd September 2008

A quieter night in the pub this week, with just seven of us in ....

Players:

David F-F, Gordon, Martin, Nick, Rich, Sue, Tracey

Games Played:

Army of Frogs

The first four were off to the lily pad .....

Rich:    Army of 10
Sue:    9 of 10
Gordon:    9 of 10
Nick:    8 of 10

This was a very tight game, although I wasn't in the running, as I decided to move my whole group at one point to what I thought would be a better position (which it was, but it put me too many moves behind).  Once all the frogs were on, it was a race to end the game which Rich eventually came out on top of, thanks partly to blocking Sue and Gordon from moving their last guys.

Kingsburg

We were now up to five with the arrival of David, so off to Kingsburg we went .....

Nick:    36
David:    35
Sue:    29
Gordon:    20
Rich:    19

This was a fun game, and a welcome return for one we haven't played for a little while. This game was peppered with bad armies sent by the King, causing us all grief at one time or another (including Rich and Gordon losing buildings). David was the only one to win the first battle, and was then the first to build an Embassy. I managed to build an Embassy a turn later, which helped me catch up with David, but otherwise I invested as heavily as I could in military buildings. When the King let us down yet again in the final round, only Sue and I defeated the enemies, whereas David drew the battle. My point for winning the fight, along with my extra point and the "best army" point were just enough to nudge me past David, who would have tied for the win as long as the army the King sent had more than a single soldier in it!

Gordon left, but Tracey and Martin appeared, so we split into two group:

Stone Age

This was option one ....

(Points + Resources + Symbols + Tools + Builders + Shamen + Farmers)

Martin:    (70 + 4 + 16 + 96 + 3 + 18 + 0)    207
Tracey:    (90 + 12 + 25 + 0 + 12 + 36 + 14)    189
Sue:    (53 + 0 + 49 + 0 + 12 + 0 + 25)    139

This game was new to both Martin and Tracey, and - for the second day running - Sue suffered from making sure everyone else knew what they were doing and didn't pay too much attention to her own position.  Martin went all-out for tools from the word go, and it looks like he managed to pick up 8 toolmakers at the same time (which was very generous of Tracey and Sue), giving him a massive 96 points for tools alone!

Agricola

And the other three of us were off to the farm ....

(Fields + Pastures + Grain + Vegetables + Sheep + Pigs + Cows - Unused Spaces + Stables + Rooms + Family + Cards + Bonuses)

David:    (3 + 3 + 4 + 4 + 0 + 0 + 3 - 0 + 0 + 3 + 15 + 6 + 0)    41
Nick:    (2 + 2 - 1 + 2 + 2 + 1 - 1 - 0 + 0 + 4 + 12 + 2 + 0)    25
Rich:    (-1 + 2 + 1 - 1 + 2 + 2 + 1 - 7 + 2 + 8 + 12 + 4 + 0)    25

This was played with the "E-Deck", although Rich had never played the game before. David had a pretty good farm going from the off, with plenty of crops on the go. I grabbed a large flock of sheep in the first stage, and then slowly roasted them throughout the game. Rich played a very good game for a first-timer, although mistakenly thinking he could upgrade from wood to stone cost him a little at the end. In fact, it cost me a little too, as I grabbed a load of stone - planning to upgrade my house in the final turn - only to lose the spaces to Rich and David, who both renovated before me. Of course, I should have immediately built the Well instead, but this only occurred to me at 5am when I woke up screaming!  A good game .... David taught us a thing or two there.

And those four games were all we had time for!  Thanks to those that came along, and we'll see you all soon.
