Thursday 10th July 2008
I'm writing these a few days (and several games) after the event, so I expect I have forgotten almost everything that happened, and this will turn out to be a "scores only" job ....
Players:
Barrie,
Darren, Mike, Nick, Phil, Rachel, Richard, Sue
Games Played:
While we were waiting for anyone else to arrive, we decided to go down the mine for some fun gem-hunting ....
Mike:
23
Darren:
11
Nick: 11
Barrie: 8
Rachel: 4
Phil:
0
Mike absolutely wiped the floor with us in this one.
We split into two groups of four, and this new one was the downstairs choice ....
Richard:
15
Nick:
12
Rachel: 11 (7)
Phil:
11 (5)
This was an interesting little game ... Quite a bit to think about in a short little card game. I think "tokens" were the tie-breaker between Rachel and Phil to see who came in last place!
And this was the choice of the other four ....
(Buildings + Vault + Bonus)
Mike: (6 + 9 + 3) 18
Sue:
(7 + 1 + 3) 11
Barrie: (1 + 6 + 3) 10
Darren: (8 + 0 + 0)
8
I know nothing about this one. In fact, it's so long since I played that I'm not sure what the different categories are!
After Carthage, it was off to an unnamed city in France .....
(Highest + Trendy + Metro - Archaeology + Colours + Bonus)
Richard:
(5 + 12 + 2 - 3 + 14 + 12) 42
Rachel: (10 + 0 + 6 - 1 + 10 +
12) 37
Nick: (5 + 3 + 2 - 0 + 12 + 8) 30
Phil: (5 + 12 + 2 - 0 + 6 +
0) 25
This was a good game, although it went on a little longer than expected! Richard was "bridges" and managed to complete three sets, Rachel was "regions" and also managed three, I had "chains" but could only manage a couple, and Phil couldn't get a single group of buildings round a lake!
The upstairs lot were off to Rome .....
Darren:
4 Conditions (32 points)
Mike:
4 Conditions (29 points)
Sue: 1 Condition (23 points)
Barrie: 1
Condition (21 points)
A tie for first and a tie for last, both decided on the count back. Darren's triggering the ending, along with his extra cash, was enough to swing it in his favour.
Meanwhile downstairs, my favourite game gets another outing ....
Richard:
39 (9)
Nick:
39 (6)
Rachel: 38
Phil: 23
This was incredibly tight. I had a couple of runs at the auction track on my own, which probably should have given me a better score than it did. I had the lowest set of suns at the end, costing me 5 points and gaining Rachel the same, and then it turns out that Richard and I tied, and he won the tie-breaker of having an embarrassingly low "9" sun as the highest between us!
Pillars of the Earth & Pillars of the Earth Expansion
And to end the night, a six-player game of Pillars ......
Rachel:
51
Nick:
50
Darren: 49
Richard: 46
Phil: 42
Sue: 41
Another very close game, with 10 points between the six of us. A good win by Rachel by the narrowest of margins, as good use of the Crusades and Priory throughout the game could well have made the difference between coming first and coming last!
And that was it for Thursday evening. Thanks to those who came along.
