How to find Shire Games

Thursday 24th April 2008

There was a dozen of us in attendance this week.

Players:

Barrie, Dave F, James, Jonathan, Mark P, Mel, Neil H, Nick, Rachel, Roj,  Sue, Tim

Games Played:

Jamaica

The first six of us were very keen to try this new pirate-y game ...

(Score + Gold +/- Treasure)

Rachel:    (15 + 9 + 7)    31
Dave:    (8 + 15 + 0)    23
Nick:    (9 + 14 - 3)    20
Mel:    (2 + 6 + 5)    13
Mark:    (8 + 0 + 1)    9
Sue:    (-5 + 12 + 0)    7

This was a load of fun. The game itself looks fantastic, which is always a good start, but this one actually plays very well too. It moves pretty quickly once you've waited for Mark to choose a card, and of course, it's full of stupid pirate jokes and puns. But that may be just us. A good win for Rachel, who always wins the first game she plays.

Scripts & Scribes

The next three in were sent upstairs to get them out of our way ....

Jonathan:    7
James:    4
Roj:    3

From those scores, I would guess that Jonathan won three of the categories, while the other guys took one each.

Race for the Galaxy

They were up to four upstairs now, so this quick(ish) card game was the choice ....

(VPs + Cards + Bonuses)

Roj:    (3 + 19 + 15)    37
Jonathan:    (18 + 13 + 0)    31
Barrie:    (6 + 18 + 0)    24
James:    (4 + 16 + 0)    20

A good win for Roj in this one. Again, I don't know a lot about the game they played, but it is nice to see James in last place.

Ticket to Ride - The Card Game

Meanwhile, Neil and Tim had arrived, and had a quick play of this one while waiting for the game upstairs to finish ..

(Tickets + Big Cities)

Neil:    (154 + 20)    174
Tim:    (129 + 30)    159

I know nothing absolutely nothing about this one (again). I haven't even had the chance to read the rules yet, so I also have no idea what those two scores refer to!

Primordial Soup

The six of us downstairs decided to try this fun game with the 6-player expansion and extra genes, which we hadn't had the chance to do before today ....

Dave:    45
Nick:    36
Rachel:    35
Mel:    33
Mark:    31
Sue:    29

This was a good game, and the first time playing for mark, Mel and Dave. We actually played it a little wrongly for the first couple of rounds, which resulted in a tougher game as poop vanished off the board! (Although I claim it hurt me more than anyone else). Dave was the first to go aggressive, and it took a couple of rounds before we decided to defend ourselves, by which time he'd established a pretty big lead.

Age of Empires III

And the six upstairs decided to go and conquer the New World ....

Jonathan:    93
James:    73
Barrie:    60
Roj:    56
Neil:    51
Tim:    44

You've guessed it .... I don't know a lot about this one either. These scores are pretty spread out, with Jonathan claiming a very impressive 20 point victory!

Saboteur

And finally, we dropped down to six players for our traditional end to the night ....

Sue:    9
Nick:    8
Rachel:    8
Roj:    6
Dave:    5
James:    0

We played four rounds, but nobody managed four wins. In fact, I think the best anyone managed was two victories in the four rounds, but twice Sue connected to the gold and got first pick. You would think in four rounds that it wouldn't be possible to get "nil points" (as they say in Eurovision), but James managed to cheer everyone up by doing just that. See? When we don't take Agricola out of the bag, he's just like the rest of us.

And that was all we managed this week. Thanks to those who came along, and we'll see you all next week.
