How to find Shire Games

Thursday 15th May 2008

A little cooler this week, which encouraged 12 people to venture outdoors .....

Players:

Barrie, Darren, Dave C, Dave F, Jonathan, Mark, Mel, Nick, Rachel, Roj, Sue, Tim

Games Played:

Keltis

The first games were all about to get underway when more people arrived, so they had a couple of games of this quickie while waiting for the rest ....

Game 1

Barrie:    30
Tim:    25
Dave C:    23

Game 2

Barrie:    32
Dave C:    28
Tim:    10

Two good wins for Barrie there, in a game that he instantly took a shine to! We promise to get this one in stock as soon as we can.

Ys

The downstairs quintet were off to ... er... somewhere in France, I think:

Dave F:    76
Sue:    70
Darren:    66
Rachel:    59
Nick:    45

This was an enjoyable game, which hadn't seen any table time for quite a while. It's a tight game with 5 players, and I seemed to be the worst at deciding where to put my little guys, wasting several of them on occasion. Dave seemed to take the lead early on, and then concentrate on a couple of colours of gem throughout the game. Sue made a late run thanks to the black market gems, but Dave just held on for the win.

Stone Age

Meanwhile, four players were upstairs playing this excellent recent release ...

(VP + Resources + Cards + Tools + Buildings + Shamen + Farmers)

Jonathan:    (81 + 3 + 49 + 12 + 0 + 9 + 40)    194
Roj:    (99 + 4 + 9 + 40 + 18 + 0 + 4)    174
Mark:    (109 + 5 + 9 + 0 + 42 + 0 + 5)    170
Mel:    (89 + 4 + 9 + 4 + 0 + 48 + 0)    154

I don't know a lot about this one, but Jonathan made a pretty good run from last on the track during the game, to first place after the final scoring. It looks like the game was won on the collection of the different symbols on the cards, as Jonathan managed 7 different symbols, while the rest of the guys got three each.

Eketorp

We lost a couple of people, and so the remaining ten split into two different groups ....

Darren:    45
Dave C:    28
Mel:    27
Dave F:    25
Barrie:    24
Mark:    24

Again, I know absolutely nothing about this one. It looks remarkably close, as long as you don't count Darren's score, as he seems to have won the game by a bit of a landslide!

Entdecker

And another game that we hadn't played for ages got a trip out (can you tell we had a bit of a tidy-up at home?) ...

Roj:    78
Rachel:    73
Nick:    55
Sue:    49

Once again, the people that had played the game before fared pretty badly! Rachel grabbed a couple of the early big islands, while Roj kindly volunteered to supply us all with cash. Then Rachel took over the "provider" role, while I was getting pretty luck with the event tiles. Roj and I had cornered the market in Native Huts, but - as the game progressed and I became the cash provider, Sue and Rachel started stealing my huts, while Roj managed to put anyone off going near his! In the end, the 30 points Roj got from his two huts allowed him to sneak past Rachel and grab the victory.

Downfall of Pompeii

We lost a few more people, and so - while waiting for Entdecker to finish - the remaining three were off to Pompeii ....

Darren:    9     (6 in Volcano)
Dave F:    9    (8 in Volcano)
Barrie:    7

This looks like it was a close one - Darren pinching the win thanks to having less guys perish in his effort to get his guys out of the city.

Würfel Bingo

And now the downstairs crowd were waiting ... so we thought we'd play a round (or more) of this until the others were done .....

Roj:    72
Nick:    38
Sue:    38
Rachel:    34

This is a great little game for filling 10 minutes when you need it to. Another odd one, as no one managed to roll a 7 until the last couple of rolls, when it was too late and we'd all (Roj excepted) given up on them. Roj won the only round we had time for, thanks to grabbing a decent score on the diagonals,  where the rest of us messed up.

Saboteur

And finally, Esther ........

Sue:    9
Barrie:    8
Dave F:    8
Darren:    5
Nick:    5
Roj:    5
Rachel:    0

We managed four rounds of our favourite closer, which was familiar to all of us, but new to Barrie. However, he got the hang of it straight away, by breaking my lamp with his very first card (he did fix it later, so I let him off .... and as it turned out, we were on different sides, so he did the right thing when he broke it!). Sue was her usual sneaky self, although got fairly heavily picked on in the second half of the game. However, the nine gold she earned in the first couple of rounds was just enough to give her the win. The less said about Rachel's performance the better.

And that was it for the night. Thanks to all those who came along.
