Monday 14th April 2008
A quiet night tonight, with just four of us in playing a few games ....
Players:
Haydn, Nick, Rich, Sue
Games Played:
Sue and I were in first, and some other miserable git was on the quiz machine, so we decided to play a game instead ....
Sue:
39
Nick: 21
In a pretty low-scoring round, Sue beat me fairly comfortably, as I sat waiting for a 9 that never appeared. We stopped after one round, as Rich arrived ....
... so the three of us decided to try out this new card game ....
Rich:
(2 + 3 + 2) 8
Nick:
4
Sue: 4
This is a very simple game, very clever, and full of horrible decisions. A lot of the score-altering cards came out early when no one really knew what they should be doing with them. And when the hands were revealed at the end of the game, Sue and I had both been going for the same sets (the workers, which were worth 4 points each), and split them one each, while Rich happily grabbed the other three sets uncontested. A fun game, played easily in under half an hour.
We were now four, and that looked like it for the evening, so this was an obvious choice ...
(Points + Resources + Symbols + Tools + Huts + Shamen + Farmers)
Sue:
(91 + 2 + 1 + 35 + 0 + 14 + 0) 143
Rich:
(112 + 6 + 1 + 6 + 12 + 0 + 4) 141
Haydn: (83 + 4 + 16 + 0 + 36 + 0 + 0) 139
Nick:
(110 + 1 + 0 + 0 + 5 + 10 + 12) 138
Wow ... this was a pretty close game! Rich and I scored a number of points during the game to give ourselves a lead on the track, but - as expected - has less effective cards at the game's end. In the very last round, Rich had the chance of giving us all free resources, and the tool that Sue nabbed gave her an extra five points, and a sneaky win. An excellent game .... really enjoyable.
We were now down to three, as Rich had to get up early the next morning (lightweight).
(Tallest + Trendy + Metro - Archaeological + Areas + Bonus)
Sue:
(10 + 6 + 1 - 1 + 12 + 8) 36
Nick:
(5 + 6 + 2 - 3 + 12 + 12) 34
Haydn: (5 + 6 + 5 - 1 + 8 +
0) 23
This time we played with the full rules, and I thought that the game improved immensely this way. The district cards are a completely fair, and the bonus cards seem a lot more balanced (although Haydn had trouble getting his buildings around the statues). A very tense and enjoyable game with Haydn placing a lot of his tallest buildings early, then struggling to get in as we outbid him constantly! I ended up with the last Archaeological token for a -2 bonus, which turned out to be the difference between Sue and I.
And
finally .... a quick game of Lost Cities - The Board Game
Keltis ....
Haydn:
45
Sue: 42
Nick: 35
Again, a lot of fun and tricky decisions in this clever little board game. We may have to get some of these for the shop. Once more, I ended up going down all five tracks, which made it very difficult. We all got our big guys to the end of their respective paths, but Haydn also managed to get another guy all the way to the end as well, which gave him a nice win to end the night.
And that was closing time. Thanks for coming along, and we'll see you next week.
