Just the six of us in the pub this week .....
Players:
Andy, David F-F, Haydn, Nick, Rich, Sue
Games Played:
The first four of us decided to have a quick go at this fun puzzle/game ....
Rich:
38
Andy:
31
Nick: 29
Sue: 22
The two that had played this before fared pretty badly here. Beginner's luck, I call it. Rich actually looked like he was struggling about half way through, as Andy and I had both scored 5 or 6 tiles, Sue had 4 (I think), and Rich was back on 3. However, the tiles he picked up were pretty useful, scoring a complete 20-point set, as well as having the bloke that went with them. This was the first time I'd played with more than two players, and it's much tougher with more players, as you have to score well in a pretty short space of time.
We were up to six players, and decided on a quick race round the island ....
(Score + Coins +/- Bonuses)
Sue:
(15 + 7 + 0) 22
Nick:
(9 + 13 - 2) 20
Rich: (3 + 6 + 7) 16
David: (-5 + 18 + 0) 13
Andy: (5 + 0 + 7) 12
Haydn:
(5 + 0 - 4) 1
This was a load of fun, as always. Sue suddenly raced ahead in the second half of the game, and suddenly we were all scrambling to catch up and not get caught for a load of points. David, on the other hand, seemed to have several reverse gears on his ship, as he was only about halfway round when the race was over. However, he had managed to collect a large supply of gold, and went pretty much unchallenged, as no one wanted to hang around long enough to fight him! The rest of us traded a fair amount of blows, with my boat attracting a lot of attention from others' cannons for no real reason! Sue eventually triumphed, although we found out afterwards that this was due to David stealing her booby-trapped treasure chest when he beat her in a battle!
We split into two groups of three, and this group were off to Alaska ....
Andy:
3
Haydn:
2
Sue: 2
Sadly, I don't know a lot about this one, despite it going on right beside me (I was too busy losing at something else). I believe there wasn't quite as much "screwage" in the game as we have seen in previous outings, which kept the time down to (almost) what is written on the box!
("Pecunia non Olet" scenario)
The other group were off to Rome to influence some people ....
David:
5 (38 points)
Rich:
5 (36 points)
Nick: 3
Hmmm ... There seems to be a pattern emerging here. I was the only one who'd played this before as well! I'm not quite sure where I went wrong, but I never seemed to be in this one, despite beating David in the only disputed takeover of the game! Rich actually managed to complete all 6 of the objectives on his card (being the first one to pick up a Tribune in a multi-player game), but David's triggering of the endgame (by collecting his last Laurel a few moments before Rich picked up his third Legion) was enough to make the difference between first and second. I was miles behind!
Well, it had to happen. We'd managed to avoid this game for almost half a year ....
Andy:
Winner!
Haydn:
Last to drop
David: 4th to fall
Nick: 3rd to go
Sue: 2nd out
Rich: First to drop.
Haydn started the strongest in this one, and looked to have the whole thing under control. Even after we all started to fall, he still had more than half his lives left, and at the end - when it was down to just the two of them - Andy was sat on his last life as Haydn had three to go. But a quick hat-trick of victories saw Andy edge through in what turned out to be a pretty tight contest. If Haydn had done his dances in the reverse order in the penultimate round, he'd have managed to knock Andy out!
And that took us to closing time this week. Thanks to those who came along.
