How to find Shire Games

Thursday 8th May 2008

It was a beautiful evening outside, which is probably why there were only the six of us stuck indoors playing games this week .....

Players:

Darren, Dave F, Mike, Nick, Rachel, Sue

Games Played:

Ra

The first five of us decided on something quick to start with ....

Nick:    55
Darren:    32
Mike:    29
Rachel:    29
Dave:    23

This looks a little more one-sided than it was. No lots were growing past the three-tile mark, which made it tricky to spend the high numbers on such small results. At the end of the second epoch, I was left in the game on my own with a few Ra spaces still to fill. If I'd have been asked to write down which 8 tiles I would like to see in the auction row, I don't think I would have been greedy enough to go for what I ended up with, as I managed to pick up about 20 points' worth of stuff! After that, I was happy just to buy my 8th Monument in the final epoch, and end up with the massive Sun total of 10, giving away 5 points to Rachel at the death.

Shadows over Camelot

Six of us were off to Camelot, despite it being a silly place.

Darren:    (Sir Palamedes)
Mike:    (Sir Tristan)
Rachel:    (Sir Gawain)
Nick:    (Sir Percival)
Sue:    (Sir Kay):                All won 7-5
Dave:    (Sir Galahad)    Lost 5-7 as the Traitor

This was very close, and a little bit tense as we crept slowly nearer to the victory. I made the mistake of heading for the Excalibur quest with a weak hand, which drew a lot of speculation that I was the traitor (however, most of it was coming from Dave). About two-thirds of the way into the game, Dave accused me, which kind of revealed himself to be the bad guy, and made our task that little bit harder as a white sword turned black. As soon as we had him revealed, we managed to successfully keep him and the siege engines at bay, although they did hover around the 11-mark for a little while. With joint efforts at keeping out the Picts and the Saxons, Sir Kay finally grabbed our winning sword.

Ticket to Ride

Mike had to leave us, and so we decided to grab this old favourite ....

Nick:    (163 + 0)    163
Sue:    (110 + 15)    125
Rachel:    (116 + 0)    116
Dave:    (98 + 10)    108
Darren:    (102 + 0)    102

I was having a bit of a good night, with another huge win! We used the USA 1910 Expansion, and to be fair, I got a pretty decent deal playing the "Mega game". I kept four of my initial tickets, and managed to build a route from San Francisco to Nashville, going across the top of the board into Canada and using a lot of the longer routes. My only slip came near the end, when I decided to draw more tickets (all of which were impossible with the number of trains I had left) rather than just throwing my remaining few trains on the board to end the game. Sue managed an impressive 7 tickets to win the Globetrotter bonus, while Dave had a 40-strong train for the Longest Train award.

Bacchus' Banquet

And finally, our favourite closer for when we haven't quite got enough for Saboteur ....

Sue:    Septimus (Conspirator)    Winner
Darren:    Vespasianus
Nick:    Caesonia
Rachel:    Claudius (deceased) and Messalina
Dave:    Caligula    (Incapacitated)

For the second time tonight, it was "all against Dave", but at least this time we knew that from the beginning! Sue was the lone Conspirator in the game, and I was the only gift-grabber - Everyone else was looking to eat and drink as much as they could. I managed to get a couple of gifts in the first few rounds, and also put a dagger into play to try and throw people off what I was trying to do (although it didn't fool anyone), while Sue was feeding Caligula as much as she could. A strange card-order brought times when every card in the seven was a good one, and then other times when they were all pretty large dishes! Rachel was the first to succumb to over-eating, and had to start again. Darren was after five meals, which is very tricky (if not impossible) when all of the "exercise" cards had already gone! Sue sneakily won the game by offering Caligula a face-down card which would have won him the game, had he not decided that she was trying to kill him, so he used his second special power to switch it with the card that she had discarded, which actually turned out to be the one that would kill him! Fun stuff .... I like this game more and more each time we play.

And after that one, we decided to call it a night a little earlier than usual. Thanks for coming out, and we'll see you next week.
