How to find Shire Games

Monday 7th April 2008

Just a half-dozen of us in this week .....

Players:

David F-F, Gordon, Nick, Rich, Sue, Tim

Games Played:

Oregon

The first three in were just about to start this one, when they became four. But that didn't stop us ....

Gordon:    102
Nick:    84
Rich:    74
Sue:    72

Gordon took command in this one pretty early on, and never really looked back after founding an early Gold Mine and using it pretty successfully. The rest of us were all playing catch-up, but never really got within shouting distance. A very enjoyable game, though ... I'm glad I stuck it in the bag.

Altamira

We were now five players, and this one had been sat at home unplayed (by Sue and I at least) since October ...

Gordon:    13
David:    7
Rich:    5
Sue:    5
Nick:    2

Oddly, I think this game only lasted about 4 rounds before Gordon once more wiped the floor with us all. It seemed like that was a short amount of time but, having nothing to compare it against, I can't be sure! As it took me about three rounds to get my head around what was going on, this put me at a severe disadvantage! And before we all knew it, Gordon had stolen the Buffalo Insignia from Rich, knocking Rich down three points and pushing Gordon over the 12-point goal.

Puerto Rico

We were now up to 6, and - having had a look at the six-player options - decided to split into two groups of three ...

(VP + Buildings + Bonus)

Gordon:    (21 + 16 + 6)    43
Rich:    (29 + 13 + 0)    40
Tim:    (14 + 17 + 6)    37

I don't know a lot about this game at all, I'm afraid. Gordon made it a perfect three out of three, and then disappeared before we could find something to beat him at!

Stone Age

Meanwhile, the other three of us were pretty keen to give this one a go ....

(Points + Symbols + Tools + Huts + Shamen + Farmers)

David:    (73 + 4 + 3 + 0 + 60 + 4)    144
Nick:    (97 + 4 + 0 + 21 + 0 + 8)    130
Sue:    (89 + 25 + 0 + 12 + 0 + 0)    126

This was David's first time at this one, while Sue and I had played once before on Thursday. The three-player game is a little more cutthroat than the 4p version , as it is possible to be locked out of the resource-collecting areas by a couple of sneaky opponents. In the second round, I was looking for a roll of 23 from my four guys in the river, which I got (by some miracle)! However, while this was enough to keep me comfortably ahead on the scoring track during the game, David was busy increasing his little tribe to the full 10 people, having picked up a couple of Shamen cards early on. In the end-scoring, his 6 x 10 people boosted him past Sue and I to claim an impressive win.

For Sale

And to end the evening, the remaining five of us decided to get on the property ladder ...

(Cheques + Cash)

Tim:    (66 + 1)    67
David:    (46 + 1)    47
Nick:    (45 + 1)    46
Sue:    (41 + 0)    41
Rich:    (40 + 0)    40

As usual, this was a fun end to the evening. And a close game it was too (if you don't count Tim, who murdered the rest of us)! Tim managed to never win an auction, but picked up a lot of second places, giving him a pretty strong hand with most of his cards in the twenties. The rest of us made some good claims and some bad ones - with the two £15k cheques coming out at the same time, making things slightly easier for the guys with the two biggest properties - but Tim could claim a lot of the larger cheques without worrying about getting caught out, giving him a very impressive victory!

And that was all we had time for this week. Thanks to those that came along, and see you all next time.
