How to find Shire Games

Monday 2nd June 2008

Now all those pesky Bank Holidays are out the way, we can get down to some serious Monday gaming again ....

Players:

David F-F, Gordon, Haydn, Lesley, Neil C, Nick, Sue

Games Played:

Ticket to Ride: The Card Game (1)

The first three of us in decided to have a quick game while waiting for the others ....

(Routes - Incompletes + Bonuses)

Gordon:    (61 - 18 + 45)    88
Nick:    (71 - 7 + 18)    82
Sue:    (75 - 25 + 12)    62

Having stated that I will always come last at this game, I managed to come not-last! We all over estimated our trains and had incomplete tickets, although after counting complete tickets and penalties, I was happily in the lead! And then we counted the "big city" bonuses, and Gordon wiped the floor with the pair of us, scoring all but two of them!

We were up to seven players now (after 1 hand of Poison which Neil managed to score 0 in), and so we split into two groups:

Hanging Gardens

This was the choice of the gang of three ....

Haydn:    56
Sue:    40
Lesley:    38

I really wanted to try this game with more than two players, as Sue and I had a game at the weekend and really enjoyed it. However, I was in the other game tonight so I missed out. Oh ... I don't really know much about this one (as you may have gathered), although the occasional glance across told me that Haydn was fastest at getting all his temples on the board, which is the key to collecting loads of tiles. I don't think anyone made a chain of 6 for the bonus tile though.

Monastery

This is what the other four of us were up to  ....

(Letters - Tiles + Coins)

Neil:    (24 - 1 + 7)    30
Nick:    (18 - 0 + 8)    26
Gordon:    (24 - 1 + 1)    24
Dave:    (18 - 0 + 4)    22

This is a pretty good game, although it took us a while to get to grips with all of the rules (and then we ignored a couple of them every now and then). There's a tile-laying and dude-placing element to the game (a little like Carcassonne in that respect), but then there's a lot more going on as well. Tiles are placed "unbuilt" and require a number of monks to finish them (think Blue Moon City), and you can move your little guys about to try and maximise your scoring each round. David and I started picking on each other (well ... I started it), which effectively put us a little behind the other two, but I started storing up my coins for points at the end, which gave me second spot behind Neil.

Keltis

The group of three had time for a couple of other games while we were busy building the Monastery ...

Haydn:    (40 + 10)    50
Lesley:    (26 + 2)    28
Sue:    (32 - 4)    28

Another comfortable win for Haydn against the girls. I know very little about this one, although all the usual noises about constantly picking up the wrong cards were coming from their table!

Ticket to Ride: The Card Game (2)

And finally, they had time for another train ride ....

(Routes - Incompletes + Bonuses)

Haydn:    (84 - 0 + 47)    131
Lesley:    (84 - 0 + 20)    104
Sue:    (72 - 0 + 26)    98

This was a much better effort than earlier in the evening, with the scores for completed tickets being a lot higher. And there seems to have been no incomplete tickets at all, which was very impressive. Haydn stole his third consecutive victory by claiming more of the major routes.

Saboteur

And finally ..... the remaining six of us decided on four round of mining for gold ....

David:    10
Haydn:    6
Neil:    6
Lesley:    4
Sue:    4
Nick:    3

Loads of fun, as always, we had three straight victories for the good guys, followed by a win for the Saboteurs as we all started to bicker with each other and break stuff. Oddly, the only person to win four rounds was Haydn, as David was honest every round. But it was David that managed to connect to the gold every single time, which gave him not only first pick of the cards, but an extra card for all three rounds!

And that was all we had time for this week. Thanks to those who came along, and we'll see you all next week.
