How to find Shire Games

Monday 28th January 2008

I was back (no pun intended) this week, so this report - in theory, anyway - should be a little more detailed than last week!

Players:

David F-F, Haydn, Lesley, Mark P, Mel, Nick, Rich, Sue

Games Played:

Coloretto

The first three of us in decided to play this until more people turned up. Then Mark and Mel turned up almost immediately, so we gave them an average score for the first round and carried on for a bit longer ....

Nick:    (47 + 29 + 12)    88
Rich:    (42 + 24 + 18)    84
Mark:    (39 + 23 + 17)    79
Mel:    (38 + 21 + 17)    76
Sue:    (27 + 11 + 19)    57

This was actually pretty unfair on Sue, as her 15-point deficit from the first (three player) round was almost impossible to catch up once there were five players and the scores became a lot lower. Having said that, if you only count the last two rounds, the scores are 41-42-40-38-30, so things wouldn't have been a whole lot different! Yes, Rich would have beaten me, but we're ignoring that.

Nottingham

We were up to seven players now, but waiting on David (plumbing trouble), so we decided on this 7-player Thursday semi-regular ....

Mark:    84
Lesley:    44
Sue:    44
Haydn:    42
Mel:    38
Rich:    35
Nick:    34

Erm ... This one was a little one-sided. I started the game by dealing Mark a set of three cards, and he never really looked back from there. There was more ambushing in this game than I've ever seen before, which also managed to affect pretty much everyone apart from Mark. Plus he never picked up a card that didn't fit his hand. And everyone traded with him. There ... I think I've taken enough credit away from him ... doesn't all have to be true, does it ?

Kingsburg

We were now up to 8 players, and split into two groups. This was one of the choices (obviously, otherwise why would I be typing the scores?).

Haydn:    41
Rich:    35
Lesley:    33
Mel:    31

This looked like a pretty good win for Haydn, as Rich is a pretty strong opponent in Kingsburg. I believe everyone lost the first battle, but things picked up a little after that!

Canal Mania

And this was the choice of the other four players. Well, actually it was David's choice, and the other three of us joined him  ...

Nick:    104
David:    99
Mark:    94
Sue:    90

This was a fun game, and the first game for David and Mark (and my first time playing the 2nd Edition). David had an early lead and looked like he was going to be tricky to catch, but half way through the game I managed to set up a nice little canal system in the South East, and starting shipping some goods in and out of the capital, which help a lot at the end of the game.

Volle Wolle

And the Kingsburg players had time for a quick closer ....

Haydn:    81
Lesley:    57
Rich:    57
Mel:    23

Don't know a whole lot about this one, although I did see Haydn counting his sheep cards at the end of the game, and he seemed to have an awful lot of them!

And - quite surprisingly - that was all we had time for this week. See you all next week!
