Thursday 17th January 2008
Another miserable evening weather-wise, but we still managed to get eleven gamers in the shop tonight ...
Players:
Darren, Dave F, Jo, Mark H, Mike, Neil, Nick, Paul, Phil, Rachel, Sue
Games Played:
The first four were in pretty early, and disappeared upstairs to play one of our standard openers ....
Dave:
10
Mark:
7
Mike:
5
Phil: 5
I don't know anything at all about this one, other than it was the start of a pretty good night for Dave ...
The next four weren't too far behind .... so a quick dice game was organised to fill up some time ....
Jo:
3
Darren:
2
Paul: 1
Rachel:
0
All I know about this one is that the 12 column was the first to be claimed (by Jo), followed quickly by Rachel rolling four 6's and completely missing a turn!
Kingsburg (1)
Sue and I were ready to join in now, and we quickly had five volunteers for a game of this excellent 2007 release ....
Dave:
35
Nick:
32
Mark: 26
Mike: 25
Phil:
19
Always a great game, this one. I felt like I'd messed up somewhere, as I was the only one to win the first two fights. I guess the resources I missed out on while I was busy recruiting soldiers were more important than I thought! Having said that, Dave was taking a lot of gambles with the enemy and getting away with it for the last three battles. It turns out I had a one in six chance of winning the game at the final fight, but the King actually bothered to send a few soldiers for a change! Another win for Dave this evening ....
Meanwhile downstairs ....
Sue:
76
Neil: 72
Darren: 53
Rachel: 51
Another game I know nothing about. Apparently, the game end kind of caught everyone by surprise, as Neil played his last market stalls, but it wasn't quite enough to stop Sue from claiming the win by a few points.
And then it was off to India (or China) ....
Rachel:
108
Paul:
87
Jo: 85
Neil: 84
Darren:
74
I have a sneaky feeling Rachel always wins this one.
It seems like quite a lot of games were played while Kingsburg was going on upstairs!
Jo:
55
Rachel:
49
Neil: 31
Paul: 24
Darren: 22
Sue: 21
... and I have another sneaky feeling that Jo has a reputation for always winning this one!
Right. We were finally all done at the same time, and so we mixed up the groups a little as a few people had to leave us ...
Four of us stayed downstairs for this excellent new Alea release ....
Dave:
89
Darren: 82
Phil: 77
Nick: 73
This was a tough game, although I guess it always is! I was the first to suffer, as the soldiers required to defeat the Mongols were quickly recruited by everyone else! Phil lagged behind for the first half of the game, but then put in a kick for the second half and came flying up the scoring track, but he had left it just a little bit too late to start his surge. Darren ended up with the most people in his palaces, after Phil and Dave were both hit quite badly by the plague, but Dave's lead held and he ended up with quite an impressive victory.
Kingsburg (2)
And the three remaining gamers were off to Kingsburg for the second time this evening ....
Rachel:
38
Sue: 34
Neil:
28
A good win for Rachel in this one. I think it was Neil's first attempt at this new favourite.
And finally ..... we were down to five players, so we had a change of closer .....
Sue:
(21 + 23 + 32) 76
Dave: (24 + 23 + 24) 71
Rachel: (16 + 25 + 19) 60
Nick: (23 + 19 + 10) 52
Darren: (13 + 10 +
25) 48
This was a lot of fun, and made a nice change for the end of the night. Dave was going for a clean sweep for the evening by just picking up one card of his colour at every chance he got, and it almost worked, until Sue had a really good final round and managed to overtake him!
And that was that for another week ... Thanks to all those who came along.
