How to find Shire Games

Monday 14th January 2008

Just the six of us out on this fairly miserable evening ...

Players:

David F-F, Mark P, Mel, Nick, Rich, Sue

Games Played:

Ra

Three of us were in first, but couldn't find anything short to play while we were waiting, so we decided this was probably the quickest game we had with us ...

Nick:    50
Sue:    49
Rich:    29

We forgot the rule of never letting Rich play push-your-luck games. Not that this is one, really, but he managed to find himself on his own at the end of the second and third Epochs, only to lose everything searching for that perfect tile! This was good news for me in the last round, as it stopped me being the player with the lowest Sun total, which would have handed the game to Sue! A very close result ....

Age of Empires III

We were now six, but there were also a surprising lack of games that catered for that many in anyone's bags ... and so we decided on a bit of an epic ....

Mel:    86
David:    79
Nick:    62
Rich:    59
Mark:    55

Sue:    43

This was a great game, as always. David was the big discoverer, along with me. Mel went for the Capital buildings, Rich was after as many Merchant ships as possible, and Sue went for cash. I'm not quite sure what Mark was up to, although he had a pretty good income each round. Anyhow .... Mel eventually started to move into the New World, and took over all of the provinces that I had decided to occupy. Grrr.

San Juan

The previous game took most of the evening, and so we ended on this quickie for four .....

(Buildings + Chapel + Specials)

Rich:    (21 + 0 + 16)    37
Sue:    (20 + 5 + 10)    35
Nick:    (22 + 0 + 8)    30
David:    (20 + 0 + 7)    27

After many months of trying, Rich finally manages to get his copy of SJ out of its shrink-wrap! And then he goes and wins the game, too! Rich and Sue both had Guild Halls, but Rich managed to get three more production buildings built. David was earning all sorts of bonuses from his violet buildings, but it didn't seem to amount to much in the long run. I had the Triumphal Arch and a monument in my hand from early on, and so - with the help of the crane - managed to build all three monuments to go with it; however, the crane - while making things cheaper - was also deleting some of my points as I went, leaving me a couple of buildings and a few points off the pace. All in all, a fun last game and a good win for Rich.

And that was all we had time for. Three games - could be a new record!
