How to find Shire Games

Monday 11th February 2008

There is no meeting this Thursday (Valentine's Day), which meant that we had our busiest night so far in The Famous Lion, with fifteen of us in the pub ....

Players:

Darren, David F-F, Faye, Gordon, Haydn, Jean, Lesley, Mark H, Mark P, Mel, Neil C, Nick, Rachel, Rich, Sue

Games Played:

League of Six

The first eight people in quickly split into two groups of four. This was the first choice:

Sue:    83
Gordon:    68    (3)
Jean:    68    (2)
Nick:    67

Bizarrely, I thought I was doing quite well in this one! I think maybe I spent a few too many guards getting into what looked like the best towns, rather than concentrating on what I needed to do to win! Sue kept her score ticking along nicely, but was sneakily picking up quite a few people for scoring at the end of the game. I was a little behind at the end, but expected to storm through with the end game scoring, and in fact I didn't catch any of them up! Still ... A great game, this one.

Race for the Galaxy

And this was the choice of the other group of four ....

Rich:    40
Neil:    28
Lesley:    24
Haydn:    22

I don't know anything about this one - too busy losing at the table next door. Looks like a pretty impressive win for Rich here, though .... That's quite a margin of victory!

Aquadukt

David and Faye arrived during the above games and played this one.

David:    51
Faye:    46

A close win for David in this one. Haven't played this for a while .... must try and get in a game of it soon, it's a fun little game.

Citadels

And while that was going on, a 5-player game of Citadels started as the last people arrived.

Mark H:    27
Darren:    21
Mel:    21
Rachel:    19
Mark P:    16

A very good result for Mark there. Well ... one of them.

Cleveland-Detroit Grand Prix

With fifteen of us standing around, the best pan of action was to grab a game and ask for opponents. Which is exactly how me and five others ended up playing this fun racing game ...

Darren:    $550,000
Rachel:    $480,000
Mel:    $330,000
Nick:    $320,000
Rich:    $290,000
Mark P:    $260,000

This was a fun game, with plenty of blocking and "screwage", to the point where players were relying on others to get their cars round the circuit in the last couple of races. Another interesting thing that I hadn't seen before: Players were actively helping the leader, in order to keep people behind them, rather than picking on the leader, as you would have expected. Still .... can't complain - those people did better than I did!

Primordial Soup

That left nine people to split into two groups. This was the choice of four of them ....

Neil:    46
Lesley:    38
Faye:    35
Sue:    31

A pretty impressive victory score for Neil there .... I have a feeling this was his first game, as well.

Canal Mania

And that left five guys to go canal building ....

Gordon:    64
Mark H:    62
David:    61
Haydn:    50
Jean:    43

This looks like it was a very close race between the top three, probably boiling down to the last couple of goods shipments to decide the winner!

Medici

The Grand Prix finished a little ahead of the other two, so the six of us went auctioning hedgehogs, amongst other things ....

Nick:    120
Darren:    90
Rachel:    89
Mel:    87
Mark P:    72
Rich:    31

Medici is always a fun game - one of my personal favourites. I tried to concentrate on a couple of goods, which paid off pretty well, especially when a pair of them were auctioned, which no one else wanted at all, and they all relied on someone else to stop me getting them!

Saboteur

It was getting late, and a few people disappeared, leaving seven of us to finish things properly ....

Mark H:    6
David:    6
Darren:    3
Faye:    3
Nick:    3
Sue:    3

Experts in the ways of Saboteur may be able to spot what happened there: The saboteurs won all three times! So those that were saboteurs twice managed to pick up 6 gold, and the rest of us (who were all saboteurs once) came last with just the three nuggets. This was still a load of fun, as the three rounds were all so different, one time only just failing to connect, while in the final round, the mine didn't even get halfway there!

And that was it for another fun night at the pub. Don't forget - next games night is a full week away, back here.
