Just the five of us in the pub for the first one of the New Year ....
Players:
David F-F, Neil C, Nick, Rich, Sue
Games Played:
Three of us were in nice and early, and so we went for this quick and clever little game (which is currently in the sale!) ...
Nick:
143
Rich:
141
Sue:
128
This was a pretty close game all the way through, but luckily the Lord came to my rescue on the very last turn, allowing me to creep past Rich and grab the game by a couple of points. However, it was Rich's first game, and I have played several times .... so there was a certain amount of relief in there as well!
We were up to four people (and then five, before we'd all had a turn), and so another quickie was called for while we waited to see if anyone else was coming.

Neil:

Rich: 4
Sue: 4

A fun filler as always. I managed to secure a couple of pretty high tiles, which no one was able to take off me (not through lack of trying), as I kept hiding them under a cheap one which I would lose on a fairly regular basis.
We decided that 5 was all we were going to get, and so David opted for this game, which - despite owning it for three months - none of us had played before!
(Goods + Cash + Boat + Harbour - Loans)
Nick:
(86 + 39 + 0 + 6 - 0) 131
David:
(86 + 40 + 0 + 0 - 0) 126
Neil: (116 + 1 + 0 + 4 - 11) 110
Sue: (82 + 8 + 0 + 2 - 0) 92
Rich:
(50 + 24 + 0 + 2 - 0) 76
This is a great game, which I think we all enjoyed immensely. Rich put himself in a spot of bother early on by refusing all bids (which were a little small, to be fair) and buying his own goods - It can take a while to recover from that position. Neil went from being the only guy with any cash (and he had quite a lot) to being the only one with a loan at the game's end. We all soon realised that a ship with a selection of goods was going to be popular, which in turn meant that we were filling our harbours with a selection of goods, and therefore producing as large a range as possible. The thing I loved about the game was that the players are in complete control of all of the prices in the game - at no point is there anything in the game that sets the prices for you, so it is completely down to the players as the money vanishes out of the game! I am very much looking forward to playing this one again.
That game took quite a while, and so this is all we had time for afterwards ....

This fun little game is always good for a laugh, although whenever I play it I always feel that it should go on a little longer. Some well-timed action cards kept this one close, although none of us could quite manage to keep up with Neil's systematic execution of every military person in the queue on Day 1.
And that was all we managed. A quiet night, but four very good games and a lot of fun. Thanks to those who came along.
