How to find Shire Games

Monday 3rd March 2008

No Sue again this week (still off in Canada), and so everyone decided it just wasn't worth coming with her not there.  I mean ... someone else would end up coming last! (It's ok ... she doesn't read these reports)

Players:

David F-F, Nick, Rich

Games Played:

Pandemic

For the first hour or two, it was just Rich and I .... so we thought we'd start by trying to save the World ...

Nick:    Scientist
Rich:    Researcher    Both won!

This was played at "standard" difficulty (with 5 Epidemic cards), and we got a pretty good start, with two of the major outbreaks starting in Atlanta and Chicago. Add to that the fact that Rich could pass me a couple of cards before he even set off, and we were well underway with the red disease cured in the first turn. By the time we had found the fourth cure, we had had a few troubles with the black disease spreading through Africa and Asia (the yellow was pretty quiet all game), but - thanks to the "forecast" card, we managed to cure that black disease before getting our final outbreak (we ended the game on 7). Still fun .... and I think it's nearly time to try the tough game.

Ivanhoe

Still just the two of us ....

Nick:    5
Rich:    3

This is a fun little card game, although with two players, when one person chooses the weapon, the other can (or sometimes must) keep quitting to increase their hand. I spent most of the game with very few cards in my hand, while Rich had a huge hand that turned out to be mainly useless, as it was composed of action cards that removed one of mine (which is not allowed if it is the only one!). Still .... we enjoyed it when the fights started to get going.

Mr. Jack

We heard that David was on his way, and decided we had time for me to teach Rich how to play this excellent game ....

Nick:    Jack (Sgt. Goodley)    Won
Rich:    Inspector    Lost    (false accusation)

This was definitely a learning game for Rich, as my many games online helped me keep Jack well hidden amongst a selection of suspects, forcing Rich to take a punt in the final round. There was one moment where I had to do something a little odd, but it went unnoticed! To be fair to Rich, I'd have struggled as the Inspector in this game, as the deal in the odd numbered rounds nearly always favoured Jack quite heavily.

Puerto Rico

David was finally with us, and Rich and I were already halfway through setting up this one ...

(VPs + Buildings + Bonus Points)

David:    (23 + 24 + 7 + 7)    61
Nick:    (30 + 15 + 7)    52            (6 goods + cash)
Rich:    (19 + 20 + 7 + 6)    52      (6 goods + cash)

This was an excellent and fun game, enjoyed by all of us. I had played the game once before about three years ago, but this was with people who had played before - so I got hammered and didn't enjoy it! However, this was three newbies playing together, and we all had a great time with it. Rich decided to go for the expensive crops and had a coffee and tobacco business up and running pretty quickly. The downside to this was that he was slightly put off shipping the goods for points when they were worth so much cash! David was on sugar and corn, while I was producing shiploads of indigo and corn. If the game was only about shipping, I would have come out comfortably on top, but sadly you have to build buildings as well - which is where I struggled! I never seemed to have any cash for buildings, while David and Rich were developing their cities quite nicely. Oddly, all of the large buildings ended up being worth about the same amount, but I only managed to build one of them, while David and Rich built two each.

And that took us quite nicely to closing time, and the end of another fun evening at the pub. See you all next week.
