How to find Shire Games

Thursday 25th October 2007

Our fears of an overly busy night were allayed, as we had 16 gamers in tonight. Just about at the limit ... but manageable.

Players:

Andy, Chooi, Darren, Dave C, Dave F, James H, Jonathan, Mark L, Nathan, Nick, Phil, Rachel, Rich J, Roj, Sue, Tim

Games Played:

Crash Tackle

A pre-arranged replay of the World Cup Final got underway nice and early ....

Mark L:    (England):    10
Rich:    (South Africa)    7

This was a bit of an upset, with Mark changing history and steering England to a tight victory.

From Mark:

England 10 - 7 South Africa

Cueto Try
Wilkinson Conversion
Wilkinson Penalty

South Africa
Montgomery Try and Conversion

English Pack were fantastic winning a scrum against the head at one point setting up the penalty. South African Try came from a mistake from England trying to do something fancy. We should have listened to Martin Johnson - Keep it simple - Keep to your roles. Instead we had a prop - Sheridan running away from his support looking to get between the posts until he was Dirty Tackled. South Africans had to yellow cards from Dangerous tackles which saw Montgomery and Steyn miss the last 5 minutes of the game in the sin bin.

Man of The Match - Sheridan (England) Always in the action and helped win a scrum against the head.

Oregon

All of a sudden there were 10 of us in and ready to go. Here's what 4 of them got up to ...

Dave F:    80
Roj:    64
James:    55
Jonathan:    41

I know nothing about how this game went. I had played it earlier in the week and enjoyed it quite a bit. Nice and simple, and yet quite a lot to plan and think about. Enjoyed by all, as far as I could tell!

Eketorp

And the other six took charge of a small band of Vikings (and put them in the hospital) ...

(Bricks + Amulets + Bonus)

Darren:    (29 + 5 + 5)    39
Rachel:    (35 + 2 + 0)    37
Phil:    (28 + 2 + 0)    30
Dave C:    (21 + 2 + 0)    23
Sue:    (19 + 2 + 0)    21
Nick:    (6 + 4 + 0)    10

Oh dear. This one didn't go very well for me at all. I started with a pretty strong hand, so after the first few fights I looked like the guy to pick on. Sadly by then, my new hand was considerably weaker, and I spent the rest of my time hoping for my little dudes to come out of hospital and back to my camp. When you only have one little guy, it seems all of a sudden everyone wants to siege your city! Darren and Rachel fought out a pretty tight battle, with Rachel looking like she was in front for most of the game, but then Darren managed to nab a couple of bricks in the final round and reach the magic 18 to get himself a few bonus points.

Animalia

And the four later arrivals tried this fun little card game.

Tim:    24
Chooi:    22
Nathan:    16
Andy:    9

A good win for Tim. Looks like Andy missed out on any bonus medals with that score!

The rugby finished, we mixed up the groups a little and started three longer five-player games.

Altamira

This was the first one ... a game which looks like a kids game, but plays like a gamers' game ...

Tim:    12
Nathan:    10    (3)
Darren:    10    (2)
Mark:    9
Dave C:    8

This looks like it was pretty tight. I have no idea what went on, but everyone seemed to enjoy the game.

Kingsburg

This one made its second consecutive Shire Gamers appearance ...

Nick:    46
Rachel:    34
James:    32
Phil:    31    (0, 12)
Sue:    31    (0, 8)

This was another very fun game of Kingsburg, which so far has been - for me at least - the stand-out game from Spiel '07. Of course, there are an awful lot of other ones still to try! I managed to build an Embassy very quickly (even paying more gold than I needed to), which gave me a whole bunch of extra points. Phil followed suit and had just about caught me up when the size of the King's army let him down and his Embassy was torn down by a herd of Zombies.

Cuba

And this was the other game ...

Dave F:    66
Jonathan:    63
Andy:    62
Roj:    61
Chooi:    59

Wow! This one looks like it was pretty close. Apparently, the whole game came down to the final round of voting in the government as to which laws got passed (and who got a few extra points to nab them the victory)!

Space Beans

After their game, a few people disappeared, and a quick two-player bean game broke out while we were waiting for things to finish up ....

Mark:    38
Darren:    24

Nothing is known about this little filler.

Saboteur

And so we ended up with 10 of us ... What else could we possibly play?

Roj:    10
James:    8
Rachel:    7
Dave F:    6
Chooi:    5
Phil:    5
Andy:    1
Mark:    1
Nick:    1
Darren:    0

As usual, a ridiculously noisy but hilariously funny game of Saboteur. I'm not sure this game will ever grow old with our group. Which is a good thing ... I think. Roj grabbed two cards on every round, giving him quite a comfortable win.

Animalia

Down to 6 players with half an hour left, we just had time for a few different people to try out this fun new card game ...

Nick:    24
Dave F:    23
James:    22
Sue:    22
Mark:    17
Roj:    17

As has happened before when I played with six players, we were running out of cards by the final round. I think the simple fix is to not let people carry their "bonus" cards over from round to round ... either using or losing them each time. Another very tight game, though ... with my grabbing one of each medal in the final round enough to give me the win by a single point.

And that was that for another week. Thanks to those who came along.
