How to find Shire Games

Monday 17th December 2007

A slight relocation to nearer the fire (which is pretty warm), but quite a few of us in for the last one before Xmas ....

Players:

Darren, David F-F, Gordon, Mark L, Mark P, Mel, Neil, Nick, Rachel, Sue, Tim

Games Played:

Space Beans

The first four in were already playing this by the time Sue and I turned up!

Darren:    40
Mark L:    26
Rachel:    25
Tim:    21

I know nothing about this one. Not a thing. Darren did seem to wipe the floor with them, though.

No Thanks!

There were now four more of us, and so the challenge was put out to try and take my "King of No Thanks" title away from me ...

(Cards - Chips)

Nick:    (50 - 28)    22
Neil:    (41 - 8)    33
Gordon:    (47 - 8)    39
Sue:    (61 - 0)    61

And another challenge fails!  Muahahahaaaaa ... I still remain the (almost) undefeated champion of No Thanks! (I did get a little lucky with the cards, however).

Camper Tour

Mark L seemed far too excited about this one. Letting him play it is sometimes the only way to a quiet evening ...

Mark P:    45
Mark L:    38
Rachel:    37
Sue:    14    (Set up home)

Again, I know nothing at all about this one. I did ask how it was on the journey home, but my memory of the end of the evening is pretty sketchy at best. For all I know, no one replied to my question.

Chang Cheng

Four others were off building the Great Wall of China:

Darren:    35
Neil:    23
Tim:    22
Mel:    13

Let me know if you're spotting a theme here, but I don't know much about this one either. To be fair, I was involved in a game of Kingsburg which went on longer than either of the two previous games, so why should I know anything? Another good win for Darren, though. It must be "revenge of the boys" night.

Kingsburg

And the other three of us were sat by the fire playing Kingsburg, hoping the game wouldn't melt.

Gordon:    37
David:    34
Nick:    18

Sadly, I do remember what happened in this one. I got rather heavily stomped on by a variety of weak enemies. In the first two years, I was in charge of the King's army, and I would have been quite happy with anything bigger than 1 soldier. Naturally, I rolled a 1 in both of those years. Gordon was the only one who managed to win all battles, and kept himself ahead of David quite nicely. In the last round, David needed 6 King's soldiers to avoid a massive penalty, so naturally I rolled a 6 that time!

Oregon

The happy campers were off to the West Coast ....

Mark P:    102
Rachel:    88
Sue:    80
Mark L:    77

A pretty comfortable win for Mark P in this one. Mark L just couldn't get the right cards (So he says!).

Race for the Galaxy

And the four Chinese Wall builders went off into space to explore a little and settle some planets ...

(Cards + Chips + Bonuses)

Darren:    (11 + 4 + 12)    27
Tim:    (23 + 0 + 0)    23
Mel:    (13 + 5 + 0)    18
Neil:    (12 + 4 + 0)    16

Looks like Darren made pretty good use of some of the bonuses on the cards, grabbing a huge 12 points in bonuses alone, while the others relied on the points gained from the cards in their display. I'm not sure if anyone had played this before .... possibly Neil, but he'd prefer I didn't mention that.

Wits & Wagers

It's nearly Christmas, and so it's party game time! The two other groups got together for a couple of games of this fun trivia game ....

Game 1

Gordon:    140
Mark P:    140
Nick:    90
Mark L:    50
Rachel:    40
David:    15
Sue:    0

Game 2

Nick:    140
Sue:    140
Gordon:    105
Mark L:    30
Rachel:    25
David:    0
Mark P:    0

These were two really fun games. I guess Gordon comes out top overall with a combined score of 245, while David's total of 15 puts him firmly at the bottom!

Ra

Five of us now decided to do something a little more serious .. so it was off to Egypt!

Darren:    49
Mark L:    47
Neil:    23    (16)
Nick:    23
Mark P:    11

This one, as you can see, was pretty much a two-horse race. In fact, if Darren hadn't grabbed the +5 bonus for highest suns (and Mark L also had the -5 for lowest total), it would have been Mark's game.

Pickomino

Meanwhile, the others stuck with the party-game theme .....

Mel:    8
Sue:    6
Gordon:    3
David:    2
Rachel:    1

Diamant

Looks like Gordon had to leave at this point ....

Game 1

David:    28
Mel:    6
Rachel:    6
Sue:    6

Game 2

David:    30
Mel:    21
Sue:    20
Rachel:    19

Two good wins for David there .... especially the first one! That looks a solo-trip in the mine!

Saboteur

And finally ..... what better way to end the year?

Darren:    10
David:    6
Nick:    6
Sue:    5
Rachel:    2
Mark L:    0

And Darren wins the final Saboteur game of 2007.

Thanks to everyone for coming along this year .... See you all in 2008!
