How to find Shire Games

Monday 15th October 2007

Every other week seems to be "quiet week" in the pub, as we were back down to 6 regulars ....

Players:

David F-F, Mark L, Nick, Rich, Sue, Tim

Games Played:

Yspahan

The first four in went for this quickie to get things started ....

Sue:    91
Nick:    78
Rich:    68
Mark:    64

This was a good start .... a nice dose of strategy, and yet the game always feels like it's nice and light, thanks to all those dice! Sue seemed to be ahead from the very beginning in this one, making good use of some cards to get all of her buildings built incredibly quickly. I tried to get the caravan going, but it was hard work, and ultimately I switched back to filling the shops for points.

Space Beans

We were now up to five, and Mark had just bought this fun little game. It was his choice, so we gave it a try ...

Rich:    33
David:    23
Nick:    19
Mark:    18
Sue:    13

A fun little game. This one is billed as the "sequel to Bohnanza", but is in fact pretty different. I guess we can all blame Sue for letting Rich win, as she was sat on his left and kept passing him the cards! I have no idea if this made a difference (Sue says it's because they were the cards that I had passed her), but it sounds better than "we were all a bit crap".

Notre Dame

Sue chose to take us all to Paris for this excellent game of cathedral building and rat watching ...

Mark:    63
Nick:    61
David:    51
Sue:    40
Rich:    32

A good win for Mark in this one, who flew under the radar a bit to take the win. David and I had gone for the park, which was visibly getting us a load of extra points, whereas Mark was just moving along steadily, and made sure he was always in the Cathedral. Mark got hit a fair bit towards the end of the game by his rat population, but still managed to keep his nose in front. I was a little short of cash and cubes throughout the game, and missed out on a 6-point bribe at one point, which looks like it cost me dearly.

Ca$h 'n Gun$

We were now up to six players, and Rich asked to play this silly (but fun) game ....

David:    Won as the Undercover Cop (with $40,000)
Mark:    $110,000
Rich:    $100,000
Nick:    $60,000
Tim:    $45,000    (deceased)
Sue:    $25,000    (also deceased)

This was a load of fun, although waving guns around in a pub in Stoke could be asking for trouble! The cop was in action early, and had made his three phone calls after only four or five rounds, and it could still have been any one of three people. I was the only one to chicken out after the reinforcements were on their way, so I knew after seven rounds that the cop had won. Tim killed Sue thanks to his fast trigger finger, but then got plugged in the final round, when he really should have ducked!

Saboteur

And finally, we just had time for four rounds of our regular closer ....

Tim:    12
Mark:    9
Nick:    7
Sue:    5
David:    3
Rich:    2

This game never fails to be a load of fun and quite often hysterical. Tim collected in pretty much every round (always being honest - for a change!). mark and I scored surprisingly well considering we were the two Saboteurs in the first round, yet Mark still managed to forget this - he proceeded to break my tools when he found out I was a Saboteur and then - to make matters far, far worse - actually connected to the gold himself! This outcome isn't catered for in the rulebook, but we just shared out the gold amongst those people that knew what they were doing!

And that brought us nicely to closing time. Thanks to those who came along.
