How to find Shire Games

Monday 10th December 2007

A handful of gamers in the pub this week (handful as in a few of them ... It's not like they're a handful or anything. Well, most of them aren't. Well, some of them. Usually).

Players:

Darren, Haydn, Lesley, Mark P, Mel, Nick, Rachel, Rich, Sue, Tim

Games Played:

Uptown

The first four in decided (actually ... I decided) to play this clever new game:

Sue:    2 groups    (4 captured tiles)
Nick:    2    (5)
Darren:    3    (3)
Rachel:    3    (7)

Another of those "simple but clever" games which takes seconds to explain, but can cause a fair bit of head-scratching. A good win for Sue, who pipped me on the tie-breaker.

Poison

There were now six of us, so a quick (?) six rounds of Poison was an obvious choice ...

Sue:    (12 + 6 + 0 + 4 + 2 + 0)    24
Mark:    (6 + 2 + 8 + 0 + 5 + 7)    28
Rachel:    (4 + 5 + 2 + 8 + 6 + 4)    29
Nick:    (6 + 9 + 7 + 6 + 0 + 3)    31
Mel:    (3 + 9 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 11)    35
Darren:    (17 + 5 + 12 + 8 + 8 + 7)    57

Always a lot of fun, this one. Sue managed to recover from a bit of a poor opening round by taking the next five rounds to earn the same number of points again!

We were now up to ten players, and split into two groups of five ...

El Capitan

This was my choice, and we quickly got four other victims ...

Rachel:    167
Nick:    144
Mark:    142
Darren:    142
Rich:    120

Four days have gone by since this game, and sadly - especially for Rachel - I can't remember the first thing about it! However, it looks like Rachel put in a pretty strong performance, with the three of us in the middle very tightly bunched, but all a fair chunk behind.

Carcassonne: Hunters & Gatherers

Meanwhile, the other five were off hunting. And gathering.

Sue:    86
Lesley:    81
Haydn:    72
Tim:    72
Mel:    48

Sue practices this game online.

Mel obviously doesn't.

Felix - The Cat in the Sack

While they were waiting for El Capitan to end, the Hunters and Gatherers decided to put some kittens in sacks ....

(Cats + Cash)

Mel:    (51 + 10)    61
Sue:    (27 + 30)    57
Lesley:    (53 + 3)    56
Haydn:    (17 + 13)    30
Tim:    (6 + 20)    26

Mel made up for her poor performance at the previous game by grabbing a whole bunch of cats, and keeping enough cash back to pip Lesley to the win.

League of Six

We changed the groups around a little, and off we went tax collecting ....

Sue:    70
Nick:    65
Rachel:    63
Mark:    50    (1)
Darren:    50    (0)

Sue was having a bit of a good night this week, as she made it four out of four victories with this excellent game.

El Grande

And the other five were off to Spain to play another of my favourite games ....

Lesley:    101
Haydn:    86
Tim:    73
Mel:    68
Rich:    66

I've just noticed. All of tonight's games so far have been one by the girls. This is not good ... Let's hope things improve. Oh - A good win for Lesley, there. A bit of a runaway victory by the looks of things

High Society

And while El Grande was wrapping up, the five tax collectors went in search of luxury goods ....

Mark:    18
Nick:    12
Sue:    9
Darren:    0
Rachel:    26    (But the least cash remaining)

Well, thanks god for that "least cash" rule, otherwise it would have been a complete sweep for the girls tonight. Luckily, Rachel got incredibly greedy and bought almost everything in sight, spending far too much in the process, and giving the win to Mark, representing the hopes of all the guys.

And that was that. Sadly, no time for Saboteur or (not so sadly) Dancing Dice this evening!

Thanks for coming along - Next week is the last one before Chrimble.
