How to find Shire Games

Thursday 8th November 2007

Just the nine of us in this week. You can tell it's getting colder (and we don't have the heat on yet!)

Players:

Darren, Dave C, Dave F, Mark L, Nick, Rachel, Roj, Sue, Tim

Games Played:

Neuroshima Hex

The first four were in nice and early, and decided to play this "quick" war game ....

Dave F:    6
Nick:    6
Mark:    4
Roj:    3

This was a fun game, although it ran a long way past the 40 minutes mentioned on the box. I guess part of this was down to none of us having played before, but I have a sneaky feeling the box is talking about the two-player game. I took a bit of a beating early on, but then successfully pleaded poverty for a while and got the others to pick on each other for a bit. A fun game, full of battles and chaos, along with a healthy dose of direct screwage. In the end, Mark was in complete control of the final battle, but rather than aiming for either myself or Dave (and deciding a winner), he chose to attack Roj and get himself out of last place!

Felix - The Cat in the Sack

While the battle raged downstairs, a couple of games were played upstairs ...

(Cats + Chips)

Sue:    (54 + 0)    54
Darren:    (35 + 15)    50
Dave C:    (31 + 12)    43
Rachel:    (-13 + 25)    12

This seemed to be a lot of fun, judging by the noise coming downstairs. It looks like it was a pretty tight three-way fight ... not quite sure what Rachel was up to, but she seems to have picked up most of the scruffy cats!

Downfall of Pompeii

The fighting was still going on downstairs. Sue ducked out to do some work, while Tim arrived to help throw people in the volcano ...

Dave C:    7    (6 in Volcano)
Tim:    7    (6 in Volcano)
Darren:    6
Rachel:    5

These are some of the lowest scores we've seen for this one, which means a couple of things: One, the volcano erupted much earlier than was expected, and two, everyone was then extremely mean to each other, and the lava flowed pretty freely! The second tie of the night, with the tie-breaker not able to separate Dave and Tim.

Kingsburg

This was requested yet again ... Partly by people who wanted to give it another try, and partly by those who hadn't played it yet and felt they were missing out!

Dave F:    49
Roj:    36
Tim:    36
Rachel:    33

I don't know a lot about this one, although Dave made a point of telling us he'd got the victory without the Embassy being built (Rachel was the only one with that building). I think Dave tried a double-strategy of Religion and Warmongering (and probably got some good dice rolls in there, as well!). Another game of this enjoyed by all who played.

Utopia

And the other five of us decided to try out this new one, which should be arriving in the shop next week.

Mark:    53
Nick:    51
Darren:    49
Sue:    40
Dave C:    37

Darren raced ahead in this one, building a couple of Monuments as early as he could. Sue, Mark and I were going for building Wonders, and I got mine in the large island before anyone had built there. We soon realised that Darren was going for the sneaky tactic of building a Monument for each civilization, and the strategy almost paid off, but towards the end of the game, he paid the penalty for going early in the round, as Sue tinkered with the scoring (in her favour), handing just enough points to Mark and I to sneak past Darren and end the game one round earlier than we were all expecting.

And finally .... Dave C had to leave us, and that left eight, which is the magic number for ....

Kutschfahrt zum Teufelsburg

Darren:
Nick:
Rachel:
Sue:        All winners.
Dave F:
Mark:
Roj:
Tim:    All losers. But it was Marks fault.

This game is always a bit of fun, despite the fact that it takes a little while for everyone to work out what the heck is going on. It soon became apparent to me that Roj and Dave were on the same side, and with Mark helping out anyone who fancied attacking me, I was starting to get an idea who my teammates were. After a little while, we all (I think) knew who was who, and it was just a case of figuring out who had which objects. mark realised that his time was running out, and - holding two keys himself - announced that Roj was holding the third. Sadly for their team, Roj had given his key to Dave, which game our team the victory. And luckily for us, Darren was planning to claim a solo victory on the very next turn, as he was sitting with the three necessary objects in his hand.

And those few games were all we had time for on this chilly evening. Thanks to those who came along.
